Don't forget Woodson. He covers the TE more now that he's a SS

I was thinking of him when I said that a lot of players will rotate in and out of that position as the game goes on.

The last couple years, as people have harped on Hawk, what I noticed was the way Capers was using him. Bishop or Smith on the lead side of the formation with Hawk on the backside. Capers once said, Hawk is always where he is suppose to be. And it seems to me that Capers kept him on the backside because of that trait. When the back side backer is not in position is when you get the huge cut back runs.

Many times I heard people complain about Hawk missing a tackle, when he had just run across the field to get in position to try a tackle after Smith/Bishop, had already missed their chance at the stop. Or how hawk was dragged by a back, yet Hawk was the only one out of the entire Dline, another LB and sometimes a safety that actually made the tackle. I'd rather he be dragged a couple yards than miss.

I like Jones, put him in to play safe in run coverage, and use his speed in pass coverage. And let Hawk loose. Let him go after the runs, let him go after the QB, and not as much, being the first blitzer so somebody else can get the credit. Even though Hawk is the best on the team at attracting the attention of blockers so others can go free.

Don't understand the ripping on Smith for this season.. his numbers overall are as good if not better than most everyone in the NFL. Across the board he is consistent and effective.

Numbers per ProFootballFocus.

Edit: If I'd had to nitpick stats one thing would be his stops (9). Most of the other LBs are in double digits including Hawk (16). His size comes into play here. But this is where I'm like: How do I know from stats if this means anything or not..? Like the situations of the game. And scrambling to find all sorts of numbers to see if he's great or not. I don't count on stats to often, but that's just me. Not calling you out like I said before I love when I see those interesting stats I wasn't aware of before. I just think stats can be useless unless it's aparent like INTs or TDs.

It makes the most sense to go with Jones, but I also think Clay Matthews would cause all sorts of problems in the middle.

Assuming Perry is okay from his injury, him on one side with Walden on the other and Clay getting pressure in the middle could really force QBs into making some idiotic mistakes. It's easy to run to the left or right, but pressure up the middle is the worst thing for a QB.

I think Smith brought flexibility to the backers group and was playing well. Using stats just to illustrate that point.

You will find I am not high on using stats solely to make an argument, especially stats using subjective analysis, but to support a point, yes I will.
