WOW!

What a great thread.

I love reading this stuff. It is food for the mind.

That's because we had big leads.

When you have the lead, as we did in most of 2011, you can run. We pretty much dominated most games in regular season last year.

So yes, there was a spike up from having a lead and running it to run out the clock, but it was statistically insignificant. It was around a 3% spike.

We also had analysis of when the Packers were within 7 pts, either ahead, tied, or behind, and the #s were the same--the running percent was in the 40s. These were close games, not games when we were blowing out the opponent.

Go back and look at the threads. Next post will have the stats from last season.

Totals
within +/- 8 = 370/227 = 61/39%
overall = 537/330 = 61/39%

So, last year when we were 15-1 in the regular season and pretty much dominant in most games, when the games were close (within 😎 we basically maintained a 60/40% split.

I expected the spike up when behind by two scores, and the spike down when ahead by two scores.

Two things surprised me--McCarthy spiked up on Pass calls when we were tied, and he didn't when we were behind by 1-8. The down 1-8 percentage was the same as the up by 1-8 percentage. In any event, feel free to keep calling for a 60/40% pass/run split. I'm good with that, too, Zombie.

macbob, our numbers look nothing like that this year. That's for sure. Had they been more balanced, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion, standing at 3-0 or 2-1.

I think we are around 70-30 so far this season. Take away the Bear game, and we're more like 80-20.

The bigger point in all of this, and I tried making a case for this around draft time, is that teams have had plenty of time to figure us out. No more back shoulder throws for big gains because their DBs are sitting on those. Safeties over the top. Pass rush full on, knowing we are not going to run.

All the more reason for the team offensive philosophy to shift, become more run oriented, and force the change on the opponent as opposed to the inverse. Many teams loaded pass rush in their front 7s. Those are faster, yet lighter players who tend to wear out when they get continually pounded on having to fight off run blocking.

This year, we ought to be forcing the run on any team we meet. Improve upon it in all phases. That will open up all the other great pass plays we have in our arsenal. All of those great plays won't work as effectively if we don't run. Pretty simple stuff.

I love what Benson's doing for us, but every time he touches the ball I hold my breathe for a fumble. Maybe that's not fair, but we can't have turnovers especially from our ground game.

I don't want to see us become a run-oriented team, I would just like a little more balance in the attack than we've shown this year (last year was great). Looking at the WCO of the 49ers in their heyday, and the Packers of the 90s, they both averaged around a Pass/Run ration of 58%/42%.

A more-balanced attack helps our passing game by slowing down the pass rush as the DL has to account for a possible running play; tiring the DLine, improving our Offense all around later in the game; forcing the LB/DBs to honor the run threat of a play-action pass, helping our WRs get open easier, etc.

61/39 is good when you have the OL. We may have to go 55/45 with this joke of an OL.

2011 OL for some reason was lightyears ahead of 2012's.

Zero2Cool (23h) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.

beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.

Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
