for a team that only lost twice last year there were enough things going wrong on the defensive side of the ball to cause a lot of frustration. Sometimes it may have been Dom's doing. Sometimes it was the players letting the team down. Dom does get a little conservative sometimes but not always. When he came out with his psycho package a couple of years ago that was pretty innovative. But it is only going to work one or two weeks. OCs then have time to watch film and make adjustments.

I have a had time accepting the adage that some tout that it is ok to give up a LOT of yards if the other team doesn't score. I would rather have a defense that gives up 50 yards a game than one that gives up 400 yards. Shut down their offense and you are probably going to win the game. (Unless you fail on ST or give them a lot of turnovers.)

Bend but try not to break, but still break very often. Especially when it matters the most, i.e., 3rd downs/must stop plays.

Dom Capers needs to step it up - That 3 man pass rush doesn't work-never has

Don't know if it was correct but someone on ESPN said the Packers brought extra guys in the pass rush 2nd most in the NFL only behind the Saints.

If he's a guru, he sucks at it.
He seems to always go very conservative when we are even a little bit ahead. Now I've been told we need to learn how to properly tackle. Where is the accountability as regards our Defensive Coordinator? I forget the actual ranking, but I know suckage when I see it, and his defense sucked.

Sucked Sucked Sucked.

There is VERY VERY VERY VERY little a coach can do when the guys up front aren't getting it done and you got not way to change it up. Other than Matthews and Bishop the front 7 got VERY VERY VERY little pressure even when he sent blitzes.

You can change things up and he seemed to try... but it still wasn't changing the fact that the guys up front weren't getting the job done.

Needed more healthy pass rush... Jenkins gone and NT Green didn't take care of himself during the lockout... killed the pass rush and Raji didn't seem able to do to much with out more help.

Between Peprah playing for Collins

One other point when it comes to giing away a lot more points in the 4th quarter: Becoming more conservative is part of it, but so is the other team becoming more aggressive because they're running out of time, and the defense starting to get tired.

No, our defense licked ass last year - and it was an abomination. I don't care how many picks we got. The only that stat that matters is getting off the field on 3rd down - and we couldn't defend 4 yards or 15. Our defense sucked.

And I think Gunny's take on Caper's accountability is completely appropriate.

The main issue with the Packers defense was tackling. Teams were going to get lots of passing yards no matter what, since the Packers lacked a pass rush and also the offense was putting up near historic numbers. When your team is down by a score and more, your offense abandons the running game and gets pass happy. You'd think that would make it EASIER to get a pass rush, but that just shows how inept the Packers pass rush was.

The yards given up don't bother me much. It's the crappy tackling that pisses me off and its not going to get better. I seen a clip of Jarrett Bush last night where he shoulder bumped someone out of bounds. Tackling needs to be done on every play, in my opinion, so it becomes a habit to tackle properly and to wrap up. Seeing that shoulder bump, I had to control the urge to Nolan Ryan my remote.

Oh, and yes, the three man rush is stupid.

I think my problem with the 3 man rush is that it is too reactive. Indeed, I think that's my problem with the Packer D in general.

I think the Capers approach is more "read-and-react." Buddy Ryan's 4-6, or in earlier days, the Purple People Eaters or the Lombardi/Hanner/Bengston defense were more attack-and-make-the-other-guy-adjust.

Attack defenses depend on good, but disciplined tackling. Not on the killer highlight-film shot, but sound wrap-up-and-drive-through-the-guy tackling. It doesn't mean freelancing, it means "We're not afraid of you, we're coming through *here* and you have to stop us or you're dead."

Read-and-react depends above all on having more acceleration -- acceleration through the hole the offensive scheme reveals after snap, closing speed if you're in coverage. Speed that sees the hole one guy is leaving and getting there before the other guy closes it. Speed that sees where the guy in front of you is going and beating him there. If you are Nick Collins or Tramon (before injury) or Sir Chuck before last year, it works. And it is the kind of thing that can yield lots of INTS even when you don't have that acceleration edge, because by reading, you see the other guy's mistakes and can take advantage of them.

But if the other guy doesn't make a mistake, and something happens to lose that acceleration edge (aging for Woodson, injury for Collins and Williams, bad tackling technique, you get big plays the other way and the other team moving down the field. And unless the acceleration edge is profound, you don't get sacks and you don't get quarterback pressure.

And the three man rush is the ultimate in read-and-react. Rush three and you're almost guaranteed to give the QB extra time. And because even a weak-noodle quarterback can put more speed on the ball than the fastest DB can run, that means you pretty need an error by the other guy to stop them.

Three man rush = "React, react, react."

I want a defense that is "You react, you react, YOU react."

[grin1]
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I have been yelling for the coaches to make the players wrap up and tackle the guy for years. Slapping and pulling at the ball is another annoyance. If they hit the ball on their way to tackling, ok. If the second guy their goes for the ball after the first guy wraps up the carrier, ok. But when the first defender tries to reach in and steal the ball while the carrier is going full speed that is not ok. That usually gives them another 5-10 yards. Often more.

Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

I am confident without any numbers to support the statement that if the Packers would have committed 50% less missed tackles, they would have went 19 - 0. I hate, absolutely HATE how poor tackling is in the NFL, and more passionately with the Packers.

I was talking to my dad about tackling the other day. He wasn't the biggest guy either in High School and he said he would take out the legs. He said I was foolish for how I tackled. I did it how I was told I had to, or I'd be on the bench. I wasn't big in High School but I sure as fuck wasn't going to let someone get past me and embarrass me.

Since I've been watching so much Olympics, ... NFL players not being able to tackle is like a swimmer not being able to backstroke!!
