If he's a guru, he sucks at it.
He seems to always go very conservative when we are even a little bit ahead. Now I've been told we need to learn how to properly tackle. Where is the accountability as regards our Defensive Coordinator? I forget the actual ranking, but I know suckage when I see it, and his defense sucked.

Total Defense - yards
32nd - Packers with 411.6 per game

Total Defense - points
19th - Packers with 22.4 points per game

Packers defense under Dom Capers hasn't been bad, it's been far more good than bad. The lack of tackling is a NFL issue, just as much as it is a Packers issue. I'm not holding my breath that the Packers suddenly are going to be a capable tackling team this year. I can confidently say the lack of tackling by the Packers has absolutely nothing to do with Dom Capers allegedly being "conservative". That's not saying Capers couldn't be more aggressive in some defensive calls... but the same can be said for a couple dozen defensive coordinators.

Point being, Dom Capers is a good DC, better than most. Remember it was his defense that played a key role in the Packers winning the Super Bowl in the 2010 season. How easily the ungrateful forget ... [aiee]

from day 1. I guess he thinks we have to run it, I'd rather he thought 46 on those plays. Our window is closing. All the money dedicated towards talent on both sides of the field is heading Aaron Rodger's way. Just look at the contracts signed for the premier QB's recently. We gotta "get" while the "gettin'" is good. Dom needs to get this defense back, rfn.

No, our defense licked ass last year - and it was an abomination. I don't care how many picks we got. The only that stat that matters is getting off the field on 3rd down - and we couldn't defend 4 yards or 15. Our defense sucked.

And I think Gunny's take on Caper's accountability is completely appropriate.

The three man rush is needed just as much as the all-out blitz. The defense needs to be unpredictable to the the opposing QB and that means occasionally dropping everyone into coverage.

I think the frustrating aspect of the three man rush is it often leads to the QB getting massive amounts of time to get the ball out. If the front three can get more pressure it will alleviate that issue a bit.

Caper's defense last year was the text book definition of bend don't break. I would like to say that the defense cost us the game against the giants in the playoffs but both sides of the ball can take the blame on that one.

For all the gullible suckers that want to rate the Packers D by the passing yards given up.

The first chart shows the ranking of all the teams by the amount of yards they gave up. The interesting thing is there is absolutely no pattern evident in the wins. It is about as random as flipping a coin. You would do no worse ranking Defenses by the DCs shoe size.

The second chart is D passer rating allowed. There is a much better correlation to wins than with passing yards. It is not a great correlation because it is only passing and only on defense. It doesn't account for the running D, offensive passing, offensive rushing and ST. But you can see that the better you are, the greater your chances of winning.

The third chart is the Passer rating differential.

Obviously if you want to win in this league, you throw the ball well and stop the pass on D.

Which brings me to our much maligned D. Who put up a woeful top 10 in D passer rating.

Another thing they did was held the opponents to an average of 3 net points a quarter. That is points the D gave up minus the points they scored directly. It doesn't count points the O or ST gave up with returns.

Just a hint, 3 net yards per quarter would be the best D in the league.

Unfortunately, they played with an offense that helped them to an 18 point lead in the 4th quarters before they started playing prevent. At which time they gave up almost half their points and over a third of all their yards.

Now, I don't think they were a great D. They had a lot of missed tackles and gave up a lot of big plays. Bishop alone gave up 9 plays of 40+ yards. Between Peprah playing for Collins and Willimas playing with 1 arm, there were a lot of missed tackles. Peprah is gone and Williams is back to playing press coverage. Which he couldn't do last year. Having only one functioning arm.

The D obviously had the most room for improvement.

However, I was much more upset with the numbers of dropped passes. Specially the critical ones. Like the TD in the KC game Finley turned into an INT.

That total yards stat is total BS. The Packers had the most passing attempts against them. Teams threw against the Packers 2 times more often than they ran. Because they had to keep up with Rodgers. Not because it was effective. Because in reality, it wasn't very effective.  YardsVSPasserRating.JPG You have insufficient rights to see the content.
