Aurora, CO is just over an hour from where I lived in Fort Collins, CO. I'm in Green Bay now, but still ... feels like this hits closer to home, if that makes sense. Dark Knight Rises is a movie I've anticipated seeing for months and in fact will be driving nearly 2hrs to see it at (the closest to me) IMAX this weekemd. If Aurora was the closest IMAX, I'd have been there with a fellow co-worker because I wouldn't have had my daughter, and I wouldn't have had my Arizona business trip.

I thought his tactics sucked. Med student?

He shot in the air, released a couple (cs equivalent?) cannisters, and THEN started shooting? (CS is tear gas)

Lucky he didn't actually know what the hell he was doing, or far more would have died, imo.

I'm sorry for the tragedy, but I'm just sayin'-- with the situation as he had it, he could have caused far more devastation than he actually did. He really could have. He might not know that, I'm just tellin' ya,

For starters, I got even money that many are alive because his gas-mask steamed up on him and he had no idea where he was firing at. They do that when you get hyper, bet he didn't know it.

The medical profession is in serious trouble if that is what they think they can produce for our consumption. even acknowledging he apparently quit. He had no scientific mind, notwithstanding his ability to confound authorities with a couple of coke bottles full of liquid and some monofilament strewn-about as of this writing. If something blows up, I'll adjust my philosophy on this matter. [palm]

Various thoughts:

1. Sad, sad, sad.

2. In a country of 300+ million, there are going to be whack-jobs who do evil things from time to time. Law of averages or something like that. Doesn't make it less sad, merely a reality of living in a large population.

3. And with 24/7 "news"-seeking making every local tragedy into a national policy debate, I think we sometimes forget just how many different ways there are for 50 people to have something bad happen to them are.

4. Sad, sad, sad.

5. My understanding, Foster, is that he wasn't a medical student, but a PhD student. IMO, grad students (like the professors they are being trained to become) tend to be smart people who are less socially adept than others on average.

6. And grad students do have a higher-than-average incidence of mental illness. It used to amaze me how many of my fellow grad students/professors were under treatment for mental health issues ... until I became one of them. That doesn't make us all whack-jobs, but it does mean that I'm not surprised that this gunman turns out to have been a grad student.

7. Just sad.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Oh, yes, and I think the fact that his "tactics sucked", as our friend puts it, is actually a good sign.

As I said, in a country with 300 million people, you're going to get whack-jobs from time to time. I'd rather have my whack-jobs being poor in tactics than the alternative.

Here's a small tip for your shallow minded thinking. One person does not merit value over everything he did. This is the same idiotic thinking that people go "omg he shot someone and played video games? VIDEO GAMES MADE HIM DO IT!"

Another aspect to this that bothers me, some needle brain writer said this is the "Batman Massacre". WTF did Batman have to do with it? Not a single damn thing. But of course, we idiot American's have to attach everything with a flashy attention getting name.

I am not saying has good tactics or bad tactics, but firing a few rounds in the air was done for a reason and I feel it's pretty damn sad that one of our own former Marine's can't figure that out.

I'm not mad at anyone here for their comments, not at all. Opinions are great. What pisses me off is this gives the Government another damn excuse to "protect us" and now when going to movies, I fear we're going to have to have a NSA-like fucking process. Of course, the main that upsets me is people died, but the ensuing consequences of the Government trying to maintain our "freedom" with more damn "precautions" that WE as taxpayers have to pay for ... pisses me off.

This is goes to my own personal ignorance here, but I thought when an emergency exit door was opened, it signaled an alarm to the location and police?

Edit, This might shock some who think this sort of thing is fairly 'new'.

Mucky Tundra (2h) : Matthew Golden=DAWG (so load the wagons!!) !!!!!
dfosterf (18-Aug) : We do have good depth at running back imo. Still so frustrating. Bitching about it is a futile excercise, which I plan to do anyway.
Mucky Tundra (17-Aug) : Whoops, I thought Zero was saying it was a surprise the Brewers lost and not Lloyd being hurt
Mucky Tundra (17-Aug) : Not a surprise; inevitable

dfosterf (13-Aug) : a lower back injury
dfosterf (13-Aug) : Doubs says he's "fine" after injury scare. Some reported it as z
Mucky Tundra (13-Aug) : With LVN that is; need to see what happens in the next practice
Mucky Tundra (13-Aug) : beast, reading about what happened, it sounded like one of those "two guys collide and are moving slow afterwards" type of deals
beast (12-Aug) : I believe Musgrave has been injured every single season since at least a Sophomore in highschool
packerfanoutwest (12-Aug) : Matt LaFleur: “Highly unlikely” Jordan Love plays more this preseason
dfosterf (12-Aug) : Doubs, Savion Williams, LVN, Musgrave all banged up to one degree or another, missing one here I forget

Mucky Tundra (9-Aug) : THE GREEN BAY PACKERS ARE PLAYING FOOTBALL TONIGHT!!!!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!!
Zero2Cool (9-Aug) : Woo-hoo
TheKanataThrilla (9-Aug) : NFL Network is broadcasting the game tonight, but not in Canada. Not sure why as no local television is showing the game.
beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
