I and my wife finally had a chance to have a “date”. We went to the local drive in theater to see “Avengers end game” and “Captain Marvel”.
We only live about 8 miles from the outdoor. It was fun! The place only had about a dozen cars there, and we got front row seats.
The place first opened in 1953. It’s like going back in time. Lots of fun! There were no mosquitoes either!

Sounds cool, Cheesey.

Drive-in theatres are such an alien concept around here. Saw one on American Pickers a few weeks ago. Seems like they're becoming more and more of a novelty over there, as well?

We use to have two near me. Now there is only one in about 100 miles.

I have not had a chance to go this year. Last year it was $10 a person for 2 or 3 movies. Almost all that went to the film distributors. The drive in owners make most of the profit off concession stand sales.

The reason I know anything about it is film film distributing syndication forced all the older theaters to modernize their projectors and go digital about 3 years ago. It cost about $40,000. Our local drive in had a few fund raisers to help get the cash. They still needed to take out a loan to cover the difference.

A lot of drive ins have weekends were they show old movies. They don't cost as much so they get to keep more of the gate. Horror Show weekends are pretty popular and they get a crowd from a pretty wide area. They bring in special guest speakers who made the movies. Kind of like a Trekie or SciFi weekend.

WPR is right. The drive in we go to put in a digital projector, and I believe the owner said 40 grand cost.
Right now they are only open Friday through Sunday. Later this month it goes to daily.
2 films for $10 each.
We take our dog with us so she gets in for free!
They pipe in the sound through your FM radio, but we do it old school and use the window speaker. The sound isn’t as good, but to me it’s more fun doing it like they did back when I was a kid. My folks would take us once in awhile to the old 41 twin in Milwaukee.
I remember seeing “Planet of the Apes” there.

The one we go to, last year when we went to a show, the Oscar Meyer weinermobile showed up. It wasn’t a planned stop, but the drivers just wanted to see a show and showed up. I got to go inside it, and even got to climb up on its roof and had my picture taken on it. Then a second one showed up! It was pretty neat! Two weinermibiles, side by side!

I grew up going to the drive-in theatre. It is really great when there were no bugs. I can remember a number of times watching a movie with a Pic Coil burning in the car. Fun times. I think the last movie I remember that I went to a Drive-in was to see one of the original Star Trek movies. Might have been "The Voyage Home".

Here’s where I came up with a great way to deal with the bugs, without having to light a coil or spray down with bug spray.
I went to WalMart, bought some window screen, and some strong magnets . I cut the screen to the size of the windows. Then when we get to the drive in, put the screens on the car windows with the magnets! Then you can keep the windows wide open and NO MOSQUITOES!
