On if he learned anything from drafting disappointing and oft-injured Tennessee defensive tackle Justin Harrell 16th overall in 2007:
Ted Thompson: No. We did our research with that pick, too. The fact that it didn’t work out is my responsibility.

hmm... what do ya think about that lol

I think the pick was more bad luck than bad pick.

Those are definitely on him, especially the latter. I felt, when Jenkins was talking about not returning last offseason, and all the posturing, that should Ted let him walk, there goes our shot at back-to-back. When he didn't attempt to replace him till much later in last year's draft, the disappointment I felt grew exponentially.

Pass rush to make your secondary better is fundamental football. How could he have let that go like he did?

What Ted should ALSO learn from Ron Wolf, is that when you have a chance at dynasty, do not rest and settle for "fart in the wind, one hit wonder"-type roster building. These days with our team as assembled are precious. Build in the right areas, and maybe win one or two more SBs.

"Building through the draft and developing your players" is one thing, but, once you are "built," I believe it would be beneficial to ride that, augment your team's overall strength by adding good players at positions that always, inevitably wind up being opened up due to FA losses, and put that F'in pedal to the metal. Employ a slight change in philosophy, because, hey, you're not building anymore. Ted CAN be more selective. He has earned that right, and his team needs (needed) that change to occur. That has not happened. Yet.

I'm not trying to seem like a no-it-all, because that's no where NEAR the case, obviously. But I didn't like the Harrell pick from the beginning, especially after researching the guy and his injury history. Just because another team was also interested in him (Denver?) doesn't change my opinion at all. I'm overly paranoid when it comes to injuries and such, and it just didn't look good for Harrell. I do believe at that time, I wanted Olsen rather than Harrell. Nothing about the pick seemed good to me. Too much of a reach with too much risk. It happens, though. I'd still prefer Ted Thompson over most GMs in the league.

Hey doddpower, totally agree on the injury thing with him, and because of that, I thought it was a really bad move. Back then, just off the top of my head, we really needed a solid DT replacement for the loss of Corey Williams, who the season prior, was really coming on. Again, Ted never replaced him till years later. I really don't want us to have to suffer through that again, like we did last year.

I like Ted, but man, when you're on your board, and you climb onto that killer wave, and you're having the time of your life, if your foot slips (FA losses), you don't just get off the wave man! You try to adjust, and keep ridin'!!!

Instead of Harrell I wanted Ted Thompson to take the trade with Clevland. Their 2nd that year and their 1st the following year, mainly because I thought it gave us a good shot at a blue chip player with the first and a similar player, to our first, with the #2. At worst we get an extra high pick. Ted Thompson must have really liked Harrell. As it turned Clevland had one of their best season, if not the best, the following year and the pick would have so so. Any way I'm fine with what Ted Thompson did, it just didn't work out. Had Harrell been able to stay healthy I believe he would have been a very good player.

As we sit a few days away from D Day I have been wondering more and more about what Uncle Teddy is thinking.

Does he feel he has done enough with the acquisition of Hargrove and Muir? If so I see him taking an OLB with his first pick. If not I see him going for a DE. Of course he has to wait to see how falls to him. Personally I would prefer he package a few of the picks and move up a few notches to grab a stud impact player.

I've seen a few mock drafts that have us getting Barron. I can't imagine that happening myself, but that would be a NICE pick at 28. I think my ideal scenario would be to take a DT/DE (Worthy) with our first, and then move up in the early second and take McClellin if he makes it out of the first. Instantly, our defense should be significantly improved.
