I'm thinking we (Ted) should guard against NE snapping up a player we really like R1. May want to nudge ahead of them with a trade. I would love to see us somehow land 3 picks in the first 60, and have those added exclusively to our pass rush, or, at least two players we can project as high quality starters DE and OLB. To me, that would seem a turning of the tide back into real contention for a SB run this upcoming season.

I would definitely trade next year's R1 packaged with a player to make it happen, if we had the right player available for us to draft. This seems a really uncomfortable proposition to many of my fellow fans of the Packers, but if it helps us to win the SB this year, I see no downside, whatsoever. I know that seems completely out of Ted's wheel house, and highly unlikely. But, so was his trade back into the first in 2009 to add both Raji -and- Matthews. Why not go for it now while we have all the horses on O in the stable, ready to run?

That R1 in trade this year may prove to have more value to us now, than waiting to use it next season -if- they have someone that they can get that they feel is worthy of the move.

For instance, let's say they have a shot to add both McClellin and Worthy, or Still or Brockers day 1. That would seem to me like a pretty nice hawl for the first day, keeping our R2 and R3.

I know these trades are not the easiest thing to pull off either, but I would love to see it happen, adding a new twist to Ted's repertoire. I really want for us to win the SB this season.

play2win, you always have some crazy trade idea that Ted Thompson is not going to do, lol. It sounds good in theory (and in Madden), but I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell Ted trades next years first, just as he's not going to trade Finley (or Jones. Although I'm sure he would consider trading Jones if anyone truly wanted him for anything significant, but it's obvious no one does).

Any draft trading will involve the picks the Packer's currently have, whether that means moving up or down. I except Ted to be quite active starting around round three. He has plenty ammunition to move up or down to secure some under the radar type players that he likes. Best case scenario for me would be sticking with our first and trying to jump up in the 2nd round to grab a player that falls. That shouldn't be as expensive as trading up in the first, and can still land a solid player that SHOULD be able to contribute significantly this season (perhaps someone like Harrison Smith or a pass rusher).

Even if they make no trades, with the amount of picks we have, I can see Ted finding some true gems, even if half the picks suck and don't make the team. Spreading the risks with all of those picks when one is a really good GM like Ted is should work out well for the Packer's this draft. I don't expect any deviation from the long-term plan with the exception of a true-stud falling (e.g. Clay Mathews III).

I don't think a first alone wouldn't get it done, you're probably looking at a 1st and 2nd round pick minimum. You have to assume the packers will have a late 1st round pick next year as well, no team is going to trade a 15-25 this year for the packers 26-32 pick next year. Even for a late first this year, they would have to give up something extra. If I'm a GM for an NFL team, I'm not trading with the Packers, Patriots, Steelers, etc for future first round picks, I'm trading with the Rams, Browns, Dolphins, etc.

I would like to see the Packer's move up too if there is a player they like, but picking so late in each round really hurts them. In 2009 they were picking at #9 in each round, making it much easier to move up. At #28, your 1st is a 2nd, your 2nd is a 3rd, your 3rd is a 4th etc. The compensatory picks may help, they've got essentially 3 4th round picks within 10 spots, you can easily trade that #28 pick in the forth round. Unfortunately I feel that they will have to give up too many picks to make a significant move up.

http://drafttek.com/tradechart.html

So the #28 and #60 (1st and 2nd) round picks might be worth the #17 or #18 pick this year. #1 and #2 next year probably worth about a #24 or so, as future picks have less value(most GM's want picks THIS year). #1 alone next year would be a early second round pick at best. Plus, trading next year's 1 means you miss out on the top 60 or so players next year, ouch.

The #28 and #132(third round) picks this year are probably enough to leap-frog NE, as I agree, they're likely looking at very similar players. This is the sort of trade that I think is very likely to happen, or trading down a few spots if they have a bunch of equally graded players, this is risky though, you don't want to give NE two chances to pick before you get one.

Completely agree with Earthquake that nobody wants to trade with teams like the Packers, Patriots, Steelers, etc., for future picks. You can guarantee those teams will make the Playoffs in 2012 and most likely 2013 as well.

Hey earthquake & doddpower, yeah, they do seem on the "crazy" end, but I am talking about keeping our #28, using R1 from next year along with a starting player to jump ahead of NE in this draft, thereby getting 3 of the top 60ish...

My thinking is a package of Jones + 2013 R1 could get us into 22-26 range. A package of Finley + 2013 R1 could get us much higher. I know there are many here who will not agree with me on this, but I do believe we could be a better team overall adding 2 R1 graded pass rushers to our team, and losing the services of either of these two players on O. Also, there are teams in that top 14 that would love to add both of them, and I could see us packaging both for a second R1, without hurting ourselves too much on O (thinking both Miami and Seattle might trade an R1 for two -sure- starters on O, familiar with Philbin MIA/Flynn SEA).

earthquake, I do like the option of using 28 and 132 to jump ahead of NE. That is definitely an option.

As for missing out on those players next year, well, we would already have that one gem to play for us this year, and he'll still be under contract next year, with an additional year's experience under his belt. And you're right, that R1 next year will more than likely be a low slotted pick. Like yourself, I wasn't thinking a first alone would get it done.

Staying on the premise of this thread, the notion is somewhat "crazy,' only because Ted has yet to make a move like this, trading a top player and an R1 from the following year to get another R1 this year. Unlikely? Absolutely. But, I do think he could swing it, and we might be way better for it, if they feel there is a player there worth making such a move. He has traded a starting WR away for an R2.

I'll say this too, as a fan, I don't know the half of it. For all I know, there is no one worth making that kind of trade. Maybe two R1s this draft are deemed unnecessary. Maybe they simply trade Jones for an R2 that gets us the 3 top 60 players. I know what I read, and the few games/videos I've seen to assess players, but that's not much compared to one of the NFL's best scouting departments in GB. I trust they will add the right players this draft, and I'm happy hoping for the best, however it works. I try to keep in mind that every year, we fans of the draft have our favorites in the top 50-100, but we really know so little. My intention in bringing up the trades I've proposed are simply to better understand the possibilities.

Yeah, a simple jump using R1 and R3 could get us ahead of NE earthquake. Absolutely. And dodd, that R3 could be the one round where we really move. Both good calls.

And, there's no guarantees. Trading up or down, we have to hit on the right players. We can't afford any duds, especially R1-3. Ted certainly has the picks to move around through the bottom half of this draft to be more selective, and that should be fun to see. Even better if we land some gems there.

Ah, F! All I want is a pass rush dammit!!![roflmao]

I think we are that close to contending again. Add your fillers at S, C, RB, CB, OT and we're ready to rock. 7 positions. 12 picks. 8 positions if we add a DT. Yeah, let's make it 8.
