I thought so at the time. Redskins drafted a punter this year--you don't do that if you're happy with your current punter. Frost should have read the writing on the wall when all the Redskins would offer him this year was a veterans minimum contract.

When Frost was cut by the Redskins, here's what they had to say on a 30 Aug 08 blog on NFL.Fanhouse.com. The part that gets me is the second to the last paragraph--the supposed reason we were gettting Frost was because of his consistency and directional kicking:

That, or the fact that Redskins fans would be a little bent that the team would waste a sixth-round pick on a punter only to release him."

Oh, this is just too much. According to the GB Press Gazette, we're bringing in Durant Brooks, the rookie punter who beat Frost out at Washington only to be cut in mid-October! Don't know if Frost could recover from being beaten out on different teams by the same guy twice in one year!

The guy sucked, and he needed to go, I'll agree. But why in the hell would they cut him without so much as a tryout to determine his replacement? No, wait - I know: there's zero chance that the three stiffs they're bringing in for auditions could possibly be worse, right? What - we didn't want to offend Frost by asking him to compete for his job?

"Gee... this house is drafty. Let's burn it to the ground. What? No, don't worry - we'll find another one somewhere..."

Honestly, I am starting to lose faith in "we had a great week of practice"; because apparently some of the remedial items aren't making it to game day. Something just isn't right there..

I wonder if there isn't some fallout yet from the offseason.. I know MM is very tight on letting coaches give interviews and what the players can talk about.. but one has to wonder if there aren't some issues under the surface here..

New England has a punter on their practice squad - Tom Malone. I figure the kid must have some talent if the Pats are keeping him handy.

Malone entered the 2002 season as USC's first true freshman starting punter in ten years, playing all 13 games and averaging 42.1 yards on his 62 punts. He made the All-Freshman Team in several publications. In the 2003 season, the sophomore again appeared in all 13 games, averaging 49.0 yards (breaking the previous USC record) on his 42 punts. Malone earned first-team All-American honors from ESPN.com, SI.com and Collegefootballnews.com, becoming USC's first-ever All-American punter. Oddly enough, Malone was a lead contender for the national punting title, but because of USC's very efficient offense that year he was five punts shy of having the NCAA-required minimum 3.6 punts per game to be listed --his 49.0 average was 1.0 yards above the national leader.

Going into his junior season, Malone had become a fan favorite due to the novelty of having an All-American punter at a school that dominated offensively. Some fans began a humorous and well-meaning "Malone4Heisman" campaign that received attention from both his teammates (including that year's actual Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart, who mentioned the campaign in his own Heisman campaign blog) and major sports media outlets. It was this campaign that dubbed Malone "the Bomb".

After his very successful junior season, there was question as to whether Malone would stay on for his senior season or leave early to enter the NFL. At a press conference with fellow touted juniors Matt Leinart and Lofa Tatupu, Malone announced he would stay on for the 2005 season.

In the summer before his senior season, Malone injured his right hip during workouts which limited his ability to practice during the season. During his final season, the USC offense performed better than it had in his previous seasons: averaged 50 points a game and only allowing Malone 30 punts in 12 games, lower than any previous season. USC did not punt during his final home game, a 66-19 offensive explosion against rival-UCLA. Despite the step backwards, Malone took things well saying, "From a team standpoint, this could not have gone better. It's the most fun you could ever imagine. From a personal standpoint, it's been a little frustrating." He graduated from USC in 2006 with a degree in political science.


He's never taken a snap as a pro, but it sounds like there might be some serious (but untapped) talent lurking there...

Then when would it be a good time to cut him? The guy SUCKED from day one. No matter WHO they put back there, he can't be any worse then Frost. He was THAT bad.
There HAS to be someone we can sign this week thats better then that.
