Is it really that surprising that the teams with arguably the two best offenses in the league played a high scoring game?

Not shocking at all.

Kind of like Clifton struggling against speed based dynamic pass rushers on turf.. but it won't stop the thread following the game of that Clifton is done and sucks.. lol. Although in this case I think it speaks more to the coaches not scheming to provide adequate assistance to a player in that situation. But that is a different thread titled.. "[Insert Coaches Name]" sucks and should be fired. 😉

But I have expressed my objections to the defense. The tackling was abysmal and they played way off the receivers, leaving the flat wide open on almost every play. In my opinion, that is a recipe for poor defensive play. They won in the end, which is the important thing; I am just concerned about a possible trend. You don't want to always have to score tons of points to win games. As I said before, though, I expected most defenses to perform poorly the first month or so. They will probably get it cleaned up, particularly if they can get Mike Neal back healthy.

FYI - I'm NOT looking the other way at our poor defensive play. I'm just saying that it's to be expected after the lockout and we'll be seeing it for the first 4 games or so this season for possibly all 32 teams.

That's funny, this is the exact opposite of what I've been hearing everywhere else. When there is a lack of preparation time, the defenses are supposed to be ahead of the offenses. That's what "they" say, anyway.

But in general.. the offensive passing game is built on timing, consistent reads among multiple players and overall depth of the playbook putting the offenses on a longer timeline of install than the defenses.

The problem with the Hawk call was that the ref who threw the flag was not in the best position to make the call.

From behind, it totally looked like Hawk level Sproles. But from the front, you could totally see it was a clean play. Justice/karma prevailed in the end.

Can't do that with D. D has to react to what the O is doing (and sometimes attack the O). D to me seems to need more communication/playing time than O.

I could be wrong, but it seems logical to me.

Let's see how the rest of the NFL looks. The deciding factor would be whether Os struggle to score or if Ds struggle to stop Os from scoring, relative to last year.

Other than the hideous tackling- wait- attempts at stripping the ball instead of tackling. And a few times when they failed to rush enough players to put pressure on Brees they did an adequate job.

I would rather see them shut NO down but that is too much to expect.

buckeyepackfan (17-Nov) : Jaire and Evans Williams are both ACTIVE! Good news.
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : The badgers really need to change the whole offensive scheme. No draws no screens plus the quarterback is marginal
Cheesey (17-Nov) : If the Badgers had a decent QB, they would have won. The guy can't hit a wide open receiver
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : chop block
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : there was a very questionable job Block call that upon viewing replay was very borderline
beast (17-Nov) : How so? (I didn't watch)
Zero2Cool (17-Nov) : Badgers got hosed vs Oregon
