The time to have this discussion was before training camp, unless Driver got hurt or underperformed in the preseason, which clearly has not been the case. He's looked as sharp as ever, and he's been perfectly healthy. What, then, would be the point in Ted and the coaching staff keeping Driver on the team, taking valuable reps with the #1 offense both in practice and in preseason games (more reps than any other player, I believe), only to cut him at the end of training camp?

I think some fans have become overconfident in Ted Thompson's ability to find young unheralded players who can perform at a high level in the NFL. It happened last year with Sam Shields, and to a lesser extent, Frank Zombo and Erik Walden. But it's not going to happen every year. Also, people may be taking Ted's unemotional approach a bit too far. Yes, he makes his decisions based on facts instead of sentimentality, but that doesn't mean he ignores the emotional makeup of the team. It would send a very weird message to the team for Ted to cut Driver right now, in addition to subtracting one of the top four WRs. Jones and Nelson may have passed him up, but not by a whole lot.

I don't think they have. 2011 will answer this question more thoroughly. But as of September 1st, 2011, Driver is our 2nd best WR. He stays for the remainder of 2011.

Driver still may be our fastest WR, for the record. He's still faster than Nelson.

This seems to be a hot topic in several threads and hopefully someone hasn't created one for it already. :)

I think if the Packers have a WR that makes them consider cutting Donald Driver, they should keep an extra WR.

I'd like to see him on the 2011 roster, but if he's not, I wouldn't be upset. I don't think he should be around in 2012 for the Packers.

Greg Jennings, I say he's Packers for life.
James Jones, I think he'll be #2 sooner than some expect.
Jordy Nelson, his wife plays a big role in whether he remains in Green Bay or leaves.
Donald Driver, I'm a little concerned about the drops and health.
Randall Cobb, rookie, but I haven't seen him really play other than return a kick off.

I think Jordy resigns before the end of 2011. And I think the Packers should have 6 WR on the roster this year.

Oh, re: the main point of thread:
1. Jennings, hopefully for years and years.
2 (sooner than people think here, I agree).
3. Driver (this year and next year).
4. Nelson this year, Cobb next year.
5. Cobb this year, West or some other guy next year.
6 or PS: West or some other guy.

I still think that there's no way Nelson ever passes Jones. I think it's more likely that Cobb will pass Nelson after this year.

So I don't think he's going to be back after this year, regardless of what happens to Driver and when.

And lets not forget, it's almost a guarantee that Ted Thompson will draft a WR again next year.

Green Bay will never cut Driver. Too valuable as a player and a leader.

Driver is still better than any WR on the Bears. Yeah he gets the dropsies occasionally, but the man's tough, and when he takes his shirt off...my gawd!

Back in the day, Ted Thompson had to get rid of all the Favre loyalists. There were guys on the team who would go along with Favre changing the plays and whatnot, trying to run the team himself. Because of this, and because of the Favre fiasco, there was talk that Ted Thompson was disrespecting veterans. He was not doing so, imo. What he was doing was attempting to re-establish control of the team by getting rid of guys who weren't getting with the program.
So the Packers have had to do some PR as a result. Last year they asked Tauscher to stick around with the team, even after his injury. They kept Al Harris around until the last possible moment. They even gave Harris a ring.
The thing with Nick Barnett might be a little different, as I suspect he might have been one of the Favre loyalists from back in the day. The last one hanging around. Although you might add DD into that group as well.
Fact is, imo, they can't get rid of DD for his reason. They will keep him on the team, but will give him a pitch count to prevent injury. They want to keep him healthy so he will last the season. Hopefully as a result of this, the Packers will not lose an up and coming talent who would have as much or more to offer this year, plus another 10 years down the road. But Ted Thompson has shown ability to consistently draft talented young WRs, and being that there are not alot of holes on this team, should be able to target one in the upcoming draft.

Sorry Nerdmann, I believe you but it's not justified to me. We don't have the luxury of stashing talent on the practice squad anymore so maybe a guy like Zombo will have to be IR'd. The premise of keeping Driver out of loyalty and chemistry over talent is wrong, and we can discuss it until somebody jumps through the screen and chokes me - I won't budge.

He gets one more year, gets the all time team receiving record, hopefully lasts the season. Probably plays 2-3 years with the Vikings, then becomes a talking head like Tiki Barber, only more successful.

Martha Careful (1h) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (11h) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (11h) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (11h) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (11h) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (11h) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (15h) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (15h) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (15h) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (18h) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (18h) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (18h) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (18h) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (18h) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (18h) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (18h) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (18h) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (19h) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (19h) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (19h) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (20h) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (20h) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20h) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (20h) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (20h) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (21h) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (21h) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (21h) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (21h) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (22h) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (23h) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (23h) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (23-Dec) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (23-Dec) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
