I don't know how this chart will show up. But here is my explanation.

There are several people that discredit the Passer Rating system. One of the problems is that in different eras, the average passer rating is different. Considering the evolution of the game, this is to be expected. This chart doesn't address any of the other intrinsic shortcomings of the rating, like fumbles, dropped passes, rushing yards and YAC.

It is, however, a simple and consistent rating that doesn't have to look at what the QBs intentions are when he takes the snap. If he is throwing it away, in Victory Formation etc.

Yes I know it is more of a team rating than an individual rating. I do take out years when the QB has no stats. A 0 would throw off the rating, but a small sample like if they only played a couple games would have no effect.

The one thing I did is I made a spreadsheet of the average passer rating for every year in the NFL from 1940 to present. Then I made a little formula where you could put in the QBs first year, last year and career passer rating. It would then add up the average NFL QB ratings for those years, divide by number of years of service and give a average NFL passer rating for those years. Then subtract that from the QBs own career passer rating. Yielding a QBPRD or QB Passer Rating Differential.

I got some interesting preliminary findings. Roger Staubach was the man. Montana was behind him. Manning is better than Brady, Rodgers is better than Both. But Rivers is better than all 3. Favre is over rated and as we all know, Cutler sucks. He is above average... Barely. Yes, I know it is a stupid pun. And who the heck is Ken Anderson and why isn't he in the HOF?

No, I don't really think this means anything and it probably won't change anybody's opinion. But it is kind of interesting.

I would like to do every QB, but until I fix the formula (I still have to select the range of years in the data manually) it takes too long. I will get some more in later. Like Young, Marino, Elway, Kelly and Graham. I expect Graham to blow everyone away. Young will be very close to Montana. Marino will be very good but not great and Elway probably under Favre. Aikman will probably be little better than Cutler.

One very interesting thing I forgot to mention. Starrs QBPRD for the post season has to be a mistake somewhere. I come up with 37.76 points above average for the years he played in. Rodgers is 28.40, which is also pretty unbelievable.

Starr and Rodgers are the rare examples of quarterbacks whose passer ratings rose in the postseason. They are, in fact, the only two quarterbacks I can think of right now for whom that was the case. Not Peyton Manning, not Tom Brady, not Ben Roethlisberger, not Drew Brees, and not Brett Favre can lay claim to such an accomplishment.

His SB performances are blown away by Favre's, and Favre of course isn't exactly spectacular in the Playoffs either.

As for Dexter's system, interesting. I actually don't discredit the passer rating system. As confusing as it is, it's not really that bad. I'd have to go SB by SB, but I'm pretty sure that the winning team had a higher passer rating than the losing team at least 3/4ths of the time.

And yes, Dexter found that Starr's off the charts in the Playoffs. That's not a mistake, Dexter. He was as good as it gets in the Playoffs. Facts are facts.

I got the formula working. I am not very good with excel, so it took me a while. It would probably work better in a database, but I wouldn't know where to begin.

There are some interesting things to note.
Montana had an amazing +52.99 career super bowl QBPRD.
Romo is pretty good. Too bad that doesn't translate to post season where he is a -2.5.
I already found a typo. I put Elway and Marino's career rating as the same. Marino is supposed to be 86.4 and have a QBPRD of 10.18, oops. I knew from my rough estimations he was over Favre. I need a fact checker.
Len Dawson was better than I thought.
We have a lot of amazing QBs in the league right now OR half of them are dragging the rating down.

This is all the farther I got with the list. If there is anybody in particular anyone wants to see, I will run the numbers.

Funny. I have heard arguments that Otto Graham is the best QB ever. Funny your new method puts him on top. I know a lot of us are thinking "who the **** is Otto Graham?"

dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
