Packers first round pick Sherrod struggling to find role

Green Bay’s first round pick Derek Sherrod has been competing to start at guard, with the idea that he’ll be the backup left tackle if things don’t work out.

After a rough training camp and preseason performance Friday night, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel wonders if Sherrod is ready to have any role at all this year.

Green Bay’s offensive line hasn’t looked good in either preseason game, but Sherrod has stuck out. He gave up pressures whether he was at guard or left tackle against Arizona. One mistake nearly cost the team the ball when Packers quarterback Matt Flynn was hit from behind.

It looks like T.J. Lang will win the team’s starting left guard spot. Marshall Newhouse could wind up taking Sherrod’s spot as the team’s backup left tackle, which would make the first round pick inactive on gamedays.

This is hardly a huge problem for the Packers. They drafted Sherrod No. 32 overall with an eye on the future, and many rookies are going to come out of the gates slow following the lockout.

We’d only be concerned if the Packers starters keep giving up sacks and looking sluggish on offense when the games actually count.

After tonight I think the Packers should drop the idea of moving Sherrod inside and allow him to stay outside and work on his tackle footwork. IMO.. it is messing with his footwork moving back and forth inside.. he needed pass protection work in the first place.. let him settle in outside and get it down.

I agree with the thread title.. Sherrod needs some development yet at this point.. would be good for him to study awhile.

Lang played a better game inside and IMO.. needs all the reps inside to get ready to go for the season.

Sherrod is not a guard. That is evident. To be guard in the NFL, you have to be nasty - and this kid is not that. He should be left out at tackle, but he needs major work. He looks confused out there. TJ is the way to go, but I have hopes for this Schlauderoff kid. Usually when a rookie O-lineman comes in and kicks ass, he's a top ten pick not named Tony Manderich. These two are developmental players. Schlauderoff to the PS but Sherrod will get a roster spot. Newhouse looks to be our backup utility man.

I will be praying for Chad Clifton's health all year, and I don't do much praying.
