I thought Marshall Newhouse was pretty good Saturday night as a backup tackle. He might be a little better right now than Sherrod. Newhouse gets in trouble when his weight is in front of his toes, he needs to get his weight under him a little more and get his head on a swivel at times.

I'm not sure what he saw because Newhouse was awful in my opinion. He lacked aggression and was slow out of his stance. I'm not sure he finished plays as he did in college. Make no mistake about it; Sherrod is ahead of Newhouse even if he is a raw player. However, it's clear T.J. Lang is ahead of Sherrod at LG and has a golden opportunity to win the job tomorrow night.

And since Colledge/Spitz are (finally) gone, and the Sitton/Bulaga picks have shown far more than those two and their "potential" ever did, I'm willing to give Sherrod the benefit of the doubt for this year. IMO doesn't have to do much more than listen and learn.

I'm a bit more concerned re: Lang, since this is, what, his third year now, but, as I said, I'm holding off on my usual OL negativity for at least a few more weeks.

One can use playcalling to assist in promoting the effectiveness of an offensive line by running the ball and using RB flares and screens.. giving the offensive line the assistance in a pause from the defensive line and pass rush.. make the defense read the play more so than turn it loose up field.

That is the quickest way to assist an offensive line's performance.. from the defenses perspective that read might only be a split second.. but that split second allows and offensive line to set and ready to take on the defender.. swaying a bit of the advantage their way.

We want Rodgers healthy not for just this season.. but for many seasons to come.. outside of developing and draft a blue chip line, one can help achieve this through play calling. That and hiring an offensive line staff that has a history of developing talent, designing protection schemes, coordinating blitz reads and communicating assignments... Since we lack the later, I suggest we utilize the former.
