I think the problem is that because it is so far outside their realm of experience, most people simply have no way to relate to a number like $1 million. They don't grasp just how huge it is. It's kind of like the idea of relative deprivation: People making $20,000 a year don't go through their lives being envious of millionaires, billionaires, or even guys making $100,000 a year -- the numbers are just too huge to grasp. They are envious of their next door neighbor who makes $5,000 more a year or has an extra bedroom or a three-car garage. Numbers with more than six figures just numb the brain, so they don't have an impact. The same phenomenon happens at all echelons: The scrub special teams guy making first-year minimum is envious of the other scrub special teamer making third-year minimum. The punter making $1 million a year is envious of the punter making $1.25 million. The quarterback making $12 million a year is envious of the quarterback making $13.1 million. The pitcher bringing in $21 million thinks he's getting a raw deal compared to the outfielder pulling in $25 million. And Warren Buffett and Bill Gates probably think that Carlos Slim is one lucky mofo.

The chronic issue was his back. I think he's got that resolved. I just think what happened to his leg last year could have happened to anybody. The signing bonus isn't that much, in the realm of pro sports contracts. If we had more depth, I'd probably just cut him, but I think he could beat out Wynn, for sure. He did last year.

People seem to rationalize that Harrell is already a sunk cost, so they might as well give him another chance. While to a certain extent that is true (they have already sunk over $14 million into him), the fact is that if the Packers cut him before a certain date, they can save themselves a decent chunk of change -- money that could be put toward retaining a player more likely to contribute substantively on the field. Lest we forget, the salary cap is declining this year; money is going to be extremely tight. The only reason why it makes any sense at all to bring him into training camp is that there are likely going to be more training-camp slots due to the abbreviated offseason. In any other season, he would simply be taking up room that could be used to evaluate a player who had a real chance of making a difference. Even so, by bringing him into camp, the Packers have to pay him his roster bonus, which reduces the cash available to sign other players.

Who cares about potential anyway? I am a far bigger fan of the no-names like Zombo who had an actual effect on the course of the season than any big name who gets signed but can't get it done. I would far rather have an entire team of workmanlike Zombos than glamorous first-rounders who warm the bench.

Then again, all I care about is winning. Their little sob stories don't interest me in the least. As soon as they cease to contribute to the end goal of winning, I want them off my team. We have welfare rolls for people down on their luck; we don't need to pay them hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.

The ACL was a really sad injury to see, but really it could become a positive for Justin. Gave him an extra year to get his back right. I'm very cautiously optimistic that he'll put together a healthy season, and if he does, he's capable of being dominant.

.it appears no one is suggesting he is going to help the Packers, however, some are fine with letting him participate in Training Camp to see what he has. There's nothing wrong with that, no one's saying to save a spot for him.

It's really tough. He's done NOTHING so far.
I'd let him come to camp, but as soon as he shows he's not 100% physically, i'd cut my losses.

Uh, $600,000, times three. And when Harrell gets injured again this year, we will be having the same discussion next off season. "Ah hell, its only another $1.5 million. Why not give him another chance?"

Maybe we should at least let him take his physical? I really don't think we need the guy, but I would like to know what kind of cap savings is realized if we do cut him.
