But Harrell looked clearly like a top 5 pick if he didn't have all those injuries in college and didn't come out the year of the playmakers (Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, LaRon Landry, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Revis ... and there were others that were flashy...)

He recovered from all of his college injuries fine... his big injury that he's never fully recovered from is his back injury which I think I've read happened in the Packers weight room. The guy had huge potential...

But why not give him another chance? ... he beat out Wynn for a spot last year... and if Jenkins goes and then Harrell might have a shot at being the 6th DL guy again... and if someone can't take it from him then do they deserve it? ... after all he is still working with a bad back...

Yeah he does seem to have the talent that it takes. I just hope he can get healthy. Maybe this lockout (and missing last season) will help fully heal his back. I felt so bad for him after he went out with that ACL injury.

Wouldn't there be a settlement that cost about 1.18 mil if they cut him?

He does have a contract. You can't just up an break a contract without some consequence.

If that is the case, see if he can make it.

Everyone always talks about $X guaranteed dollars a player gets when he signs a contract, you are going to make that much money whether you are cut or not. With all that being said his contract isn't that much and the savings for cutting him wouldn't be that much. At least let him show up to camp and see if he can be a serviceable 5 tech.

If a player is cut with 2 years to go on his contract (Not Harrell) instead of spreading the bonus over the remaining 2 years it is all added to the cap of the year in which he is cut.

In Harrell's case even if he is cut he will still have 1 year's worth of his bonus money applied to the 2011 cap.

And I'm not willing to pay the 1/2 million to sign him to a roster bonus (money he's NOT entitled to or it would have been a guaranteed bonus, not a roster bonus). He's in the 5th year of a 6 year contract. Accelerating the 6th year of his original guaranteed bonus to this year would not have an incredible effect on the cap, and likely lower than the $1.2M salary + roster bonus impact on the cap.

I've bolded the parts of your quote above that sum it up for me. I would have worded your last paragraph:

But why give him another chance?...after all he is still working with a bad back, and recovering from a torn ACL...

Harrell's own quote sums it up best for me:

"Being there four years with my rash of injuries and the lack of production, a lot of people are surprised that I'm still there," Harrell said.

If we can't rely on him to be on the field, then in my opinion we need to look for a more reliable option.

The back seems to be resolved. The leg injury could have happened to anyone. If we had Jolly and Jenkins coming, back I don't think we'd have room for him. But I think he gets a chance to make the team this year.

Cut him and save the $1.2M (salary + roster bonus). We've poured enough money down the drain as it is.

Harrell still has potential on the field but his potential to be injured seems to be even higher. So he would need to out play guys... and it seems as last year he out played Wynn as they keep over Wynn...

As for position depth the team seems to normally keep 6 DL guys. With out Jenkins my guess would be Raji, Pickett, Green, Neal and Wilson getting in as the top 5... leaving one spot to battle for between Harrell, Wynn, Guy and the other DL guys.... with Guy getting some help as they count potential much more for draft picks/rookies it seems...

They might keep 7 if two of them stepped up and show something or if Guy showed potential and one other step up.

But why give him another chance?...after all he is still working with a bad back, and recovering from a torn ACL...

If it's not going to cost us anything, then sure, let him compete.

If it's going to cost us almost $600K to find out ($575K roster bonus) or the possibility of owing him yet another season salary due to incurring yet another injury, then I wouldn't be willing to waste the $$ on the slim chance that he'll be any good after essentially being out of football the last 5 years (4 years NFL & senior year college) in which he's played in a grand total of 17 games).

If he's healthy enough to pass his physical, then pass him and cut him before his brokenankle-reaggravatedankle-rightlegsurgery(2003)-ankleinjury(2004)-tornbiceps(2006)-herniateddisk-sorehip(2008)-tornacl(2010) flare up again.
