Am I crazy to think that, personal preferences aside, it would be in the best interest of the franchise to cut Driver lose and re-sign Jones? Jones is likely to have better numbers than Driver anyway next season if he comes back, and he will be around for several more years.

I know this isn't a popular stance, but if it comes down to letting Jones go just to keep Driver for one more decent season likely, it would seem to make sense.

Thoughts?

Jones can't catch the ball over his shoulder down the sidelines. How is he going to do on those deep crossing routes Driver runs after the first time he gets whacked by a safety over the top?

I am not sold that Jones is the guy to run the routes they ask Driver to run.

I think the Packers are looking for an upgrade in Swain and leaving the door ajar for Jones to resign if he chooses.. if it comes down to money with Jones and an offer elsewhere that doesn't fit the Packers thinking.. so be it.

Jennings
Driver
Nelson
Cobb

Jones comes down to cash...

Swain and the countless other WR prospects Ted Thompson will add between now and camp should be pushing for a 6th WR or insurance for Jones if he bolts.

If I had to wager.. Jones is back next season in GB.. the seemingly strong bond between Jennings and Jones should secure that IMO.

But really, how many passes did Jones drop all season? I'm pretty sure it was less than 10, and maybe more like 6. I don't have the numbers in front of me right now. Yes, as has been discussed, his drops were huge, but we can't crucify the guy over < 10 drops, IMO. Didn't Nelson once drop 4 passes in one game? Also, I think Driver was the leading "dropper" of the group? I remember a thread discussing this but I can't remember the specific numbers.

Also, it's not that Jones has to take Driver's role explicitly. A combination of Nelson / Jones / Cobb should work just fine, plus with better deep ability. It's a little less black and white than just swapping out a player for a player. We will have more of a committee approach going forward more than likely.

As I said, if the numbers work out and keeping Driver has no effect on losing Jones then that's ideal. I simply wouldn't like to lose a talented, although far from perfect, player for another that will be lucky to be on the team at the start of the 2012 season. I still see room for Jones to improve and contribute for the next 3-4 years fairly significantly, which is more than I can say of Driver.

It's not the quantity of catches. it's the quality. Jones dropped epic TDs in the Playoffs.

The catches Driver dropped were often dangerous routes while getting body slammed by a LB, routes that most WRs would prefer not to take.

Don't know what you got 'til it's gone. Driver's got more guts than 90% of WRs in the NFL. Aaron knows that if you need a 4 yard first down completion, Driver is the man. How important are those completions? Very.

I'll have to disagree with you there. Jones dropped, what, two big passes? Sure, it's a big deal, but at least he was open to make a play. He also made some big plays. Do we really completely dismiss a guy over a few big drops (yes I remember the season before last, but attribute that to growing pains as well)? He's not an elite player. I'm not stating that. However, I think he still has a lot to offer to our team for the next 3-4 years, especially with Bennett coaching him up. I understand what Driver offers and am not taking anything away from it. However, I'm skeptical of what he has left to offer, specifically beyond the 2011 season. If Jones leaves, it will probably mean another 3rd or higher draft pick on a receiver in the next draft, a couple years of development, and hopefully he turns out to be more of a play maker than Jones, but obviously that's far from a guarantee. I'm not sure that is ideal considering we have a solid player in Jones already.

Another thing I like about Jones is he seems to stay pretty healthy.

Jennings dropped a couple big receptions last season... Lions game comes to mind . Big game at the time for the Pack. Drops happen.

Good point. I think some of us attach too much emotion to certain moments. I certainly did for a good while with Jones as well. But, thinking about it objectively, I understand that he is still valuable to this team. Is he worth elite money? No. But he is worth a decent contract and I would love to see him back.

Well, I was a big Jones defender up until the Playoffs. I got sick of defending him.

Zombie, you definitely were. No need to defend him though. He can stand on his own. As I said, he's not elite (and doesn't deserve elite money), but he is a solid player who still has room to improve, in my opinion. He also can contribute significantly to the Packers for several more seasons if given the opportunity, and may not make WR another need going into next years draft. Stick with the guy we have been developing for for a couple of years instead of starting over.

Hopefully no one offers him big time money.
