http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/02/02/philbin-says-the-packers-dont-want-to-be-one-dimensional/

Since were down in Dallas and out of moms basement for the week, we occasionally run into real reporter problems.

One issue: We have hours of recorded interviews and seemingly no time to comb through them looking for posts. So its time to start combing.

I sat down with Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin Tuesday and asked about the temptation to simply ignore the run altogether against Pittsburgh.

I think a team would play into the hands of the opposition if you throw every down, Philbin said. Your quarterback will be in one spot and you would be asking your offensive linemen to sit back there and block every single blitz and every defensive line game and every twice. I dont know that you can do that.

The Packers did it a year ago. Green Bay called 48 passes against Pittsburgh during 2009?s 37-36 loss, and that was with Ryan Grant on the roster.

Right tackle Bryan Bulaga would be tested in pass protection if Green Bay floods the field with receivers, but the best way to Pittsburgh is to throw 40+ times. (Philbin said the Packers dont go into a game with a set pass/run ratio in mind.) Tom Brady and Drew Brees averaged 44 attempts against the Steelers this year. They picked Pittsburgh apart with short precision passing for 655 yards, five scores, and one pick.

Pittsburghs secondary depth is the closest thing their defense has to a weakness and theres no reason to think the Packers can have any success running the ball on early downs.

We suspect they wont try to run as much as Philbin implies. Balance is overrated.

I got to agree - would think it would be absurd to try to stuff the run down their throat with the #1 ranked running defense.

IMO screens; outside runs and short yardage passes should tear em up. Remember kurt warner tearing us up last year with those slants and short yardage pass plays.

Make them play dime defense all day. We have the quarterback for the quick reads on a blitz, who also has the patience to let the big play happen. That team doesn't scare me, what does concern me are players being taken out. It's not like they haven't earned their reputation.

Uh oh.

Certain people on this board will probably be thinking "I'm not going to comment here because Zombieslayer might see this thread."

I think we should just pass, pass and pass some more. As long as we're running a few a screens to screw up their blitzes and maybe a run or two here and there.

and Rodgers will get killed if we pass, pass and pass some more. Steelers aren't exactly slouches on pass rushing, lol.

I'm counting on Rodgers being quick and accurate. If he really thinks he can stay in the pocket as long as he normally does this game I'm worried. Not only because he's going to get a fierce pass rush every play but because the Steelers hit hard. Doesn't Rodgers also have a 100+ QB rating against the blitz or am I misremembering again?

EDIT: This was from before the Wild Card game.

The Eagles better be careful blitzing Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. On 166 drop backs, Rodgers completed 66 percent of his throws against a blitz , throwing for 11 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He was sacked eight times. His quarterback rating of 104.5 vs. the blitz led the NFL.

Plus the Steelers are not hiding the fact that they would love to take Rodgers out of the game. Alot of talk this week about Harrison taking a shot and accepting the fine, if he can get Rodgers out of the game.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

If that happens Harrison should get ejected and probably suspended.

ala Ken Wisenhunt, hopefully McCarthy addresses that exact issue with the referees before the coin flip.
