If Florio is going to accept responsibility, he should post the truth on profootballtalk and at least admit his mistake. He basically called Rodgers an ass, which is ridiculous. Personally, I also thought the video looked really bad myself, so it is good to know WBAY is putting this out there instead of ignoring it. I guess looks can be deceiving indeed. If he's signed things for her before, then he certainly doesn't need to go out of his way to do it again.

Which is exactly why I am reluctant to go on the 'deep' end on things that its so clear there's another side to it.

I mentioned it as well, it didn't look good, but once again, we don't know all of the circumstances and before judging, we should wait to hear more about it.

I posted the link in a comment on PFT, doubt it'll go through since my previous one didn't, but I was tame in this comment.

His final word ...

Last word on the Aaron Rodgers-Jan Cavanaugh video

When we posted on Sunday the item regarding video from WBAY-TV showing Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers breezing by a breast cancer patient hopeful that hed sign her hat, we knew there would be a reaction.

Packers fans, basking in the franchises biggest win since Brett Favre left town, have no interest in any criticism of their new green-and-golden boy. Its obvious. Its predictable. And we dont blame them for being protective of their star quarterback.

After all, plenty of fans of other teams blindly have defended far, far worse behavior by their star quarterbacks. (The Falcons circa 2007 and the Steelers circa 2010 come to mind.) Rodgers, as we admitted on Sunday, was fully within his rights to not acknowledge the existence of Jan Cavanaugh while walking through the airport as the team either was heading to or returning from Atlanta. And we had every right to react to the video, as harvested, edited, and presented by WBAY, by opining that Rodgers was acting like an ass.

Since the item surfaced here and at Deadspin, a litany of excuses and clarifications has emerged on Rodgers behalf. For some bloggers inclined either to pander to Packers fans or to settle old scores with (or possibly, to gain some traffic by sparking a public fight), the caught-on-film conduct of Rodgers has been overlooked or minimized in favor of attacks against those who dared to point out what the video obviously shows Rodgers walking past Jan Cavanaugh as if she didnt exist.

How strong is the desire to defend Rodgers from criticism? Weve even been accused of running a payola ring, trading favorable coverage of players for cash. Yes, at least one man with a cheesehead fashioned from tin foil suggests that we have funded PFT by illegally taking money from agents to say nice things about their clients, and to say bad things about the clients of their competitors. (For the benefit of those who will be inclined to think its true unless we dignify the delusion with a denial, the accusation is completely untrue.)

Actually, it was against our interests to post the story criticizing Rodgers, since we had submitted a request on Sunday for a Packers player to appear this week on PFT Live. Weve got a feeling that, for perhaps the same reason WBAY so quickly deleted the video, our request will be denied.

It doesnt matter whether it was Rodgers or any other player. Whoever walked by Jan Cavanaugh like she wasnt even there was going to get reamed on the pages of PFT, because I believe that cancer patients deserve the highest level of respect and deference that can be provided.

Anyone whose life has been touched by the disease knows what I mean. We all can see in Jan Cavanaugh the mother or sister or aunt or friend or neighbor who has had to confront a silent killer that could kill and, frankly, eventually will kill many of the people reading these words. (For those of you who make it to 45 without getting cancer, thats probably about the time youll start worrying from time to time about all the different organs in your body, and your spouses body, that eventually could be infested with it.)

This, in the lull between a boring Seahawks-Bears game and the start of the Jets-Patriots game the WBAY report, forwarded to us by multiple readers, struck a nerve with me.

So what of the follow-up report from WBAY, which likely has spent much of the past 24 hours apologizing to angry viewers for depicting Rodgers in a negative light and simultaneously applying lips to the buttocks of anyone and everyone in the Packers organization, that Rodgers signed a jersey the week before for Cavanaugh? Apparently, some of you think that makes his decision to walk past her without a nod or a smile or anything else fine and dandy.

I dont.

If anything, this familiarity tends to reinforce the notion that Rodgers knew or should have known that Cavanaugh has cancer, making his failure to offer a friendly nod or a wave or a quick not today, maybe next time while she waited for him to sign her hat even more strange.

Many Packers fans have pointed out all the charitable things that Rodgers has done over the years. He deserves credit for that. And so allow us publicly to declare, Attaboy.

Folks who frequent this site on a regular basis know that we arent terribly impressed by the things athletes do while the world is watching. As one high-level executive with a team other than the Packers (and not an NFC North rival) observed in response the WBAY video, what we do when tired, cranky, busy, etc. reveals more about our true character than what we do when attending a charitable event arranged through the team and/or handlers.

As to the argument that Rodgers was wearing ear buds and thus not paying attention to his surroundings, that excuse doesnt cut it as to anyone who is over the age 0f 15. Rodgers knows that fans gather in that airport when the Packers come and go. Choosing to remain in his own little world isnt the way to interact with those whose interest in football helps pay Rodgers salary. (Which was the real point of our first story on the matter.)

As to the idea that Rodgers was just focused on the task at hand, the Packers were flying to Atlanta, not walking into the Georgia Dome.

As to the idea that Jan Cavanaugh wasnt bothered by Rodgers decision to snub her, thats her prerogative. And we respect her for it. Shes a Packers fan, she lives in the area, she wants to see the team do well, and shes got bigger things in her life to worry about than whether Aaron Rodgers will give her the time of day.

Bottom line? As we said last night on Twitter, nothing said or argued or reported since we first posted the item changes for us the image of Rodgers ignoring Jan Cavanaugh. But if it will make Packers fans feel better to complain about our coverage of the incident instead of acknowledging (as a few grudgingly have done) that Rodgers handled the situation poorly, nothing we can say or argue or report will change that.

came on her to post that zero.

I hope that Packer hating, self-absorbed fuck nut Florio who can't concede that he could possibly have been wrong is followed by 50 adoring fans every fucking waking minute of the rest of his life, and that 49 of those 50 fans follow with video cameras to record the one instance that he doesn't drop everything he's doing to sign every single autograph request.

When he inevitably DOESN'T respect the request of his 50 adoring fans, I will post that video on youtube, packershome.com, and my own anti-florio site describing what a self absorbed, pompous fuckbag he is. I will also throw in some random story about how heroic cancer survivors are just to fabricate some cheap unrelated sympathy points with my audience.

Mike Florio can bury his head in the sand all he wants. He's already decided to be judge and jury and that Aaron Rodgers is guilty of being the biggest dick in the world. Apparently, in Florio's world, all people have to live up to the highest expectations of every person. When they are "cranky, tired, etc" they have to be even better humans because they are public figures. That's a pretty bold statement for him to come with, considering he has probably never nor will he likely EVER receive the same amount of public scrutiny of any NFL starter, much less one of the premier QBs in the league.

In my reading of his "rebuttal", the only thing I think he got right was pointing out that the video was "harvested, edited and presented" by WBAY. I said this in chat during the Bear game and I know, Zero, that you were frustrated with my point. I truly believe that WBAY holds some fault in this matter for the way they presented/edited the story. In the end, they made Clay look great at the expense of Aaron. At the very least, if they were simply trying to build sympathy by showing her not able to get some autographs (a normal experience for sure....as you can't sign one for everyone), then they have a pretty naive news editor to not see the hidden message he was sending.

Ultimately, we are all humans. We are mostly good. Some better than others. Some worse. I think you need to look at the body of what Aaron Rodgers has done for the team and for the community (and for Jan Cavanaugh specifically, signing multiple articles for her in the past.) Zero, you were right to chastise Florio for not doing his due diligence. He looked at 16 seconds of video, out of context and with no background, and leapt to some pretty accusatory conclusions. When proven wrong, he decided to not back down but stubbornly stand his ground. I'll leap to my own conclusions here and say this speaks volumes to me about his own "character."

istanbulpacker, in chat, I said the same thing, then you kept going with it, so I kept going, just on the other side, to keep you going. I mentioned in the shout that you had mentioned WBAY should have done better on their editing as well. :)

I maintain that Florio should have used the piece more as a GOOD for Clay, than a BAD for Rodgers, then again, who wants to read happy go lucky stuff? Not the majority of our society, sadly.

musccy, I think we were composing at the same time. I think this point above, though, is the most despicable. I have nothing but love and admiration for cancer survivors. Personally, I give higher respect and deference to wounded veterans who have come home missing legs, arms, eyes, etc. Even higher to the families of those who have lost their children.

He fails to give those cancer survivors his highest respect by dragging them into a non-story as some form of evidence to try to show that he is a great guy. He USES them to try to make him look right (when he knows he is wrong). What a douche.

Thanks for that though. Everyone does seem to focus on the negative. Joseph Conrad called it the "fascination of the abomination." We like horrible awful things. Disney moments?? Nah, not so much. Those are for kids...we need something edgier. Bullshit, I say.

Florio w/the (knowing/unknowing) aid of WBAY, probably gave this poor woman an anxiety attack thinking she caused all this stir and personal injury to her(our) beloved Packers. She was used.

Obviously, cancer has had an impact in Florio's life. That is the first thing I get out of reading his post.

However, he is a journalist now affiliated with NBC. He needs to take account for his actions even if he is sensitive about a particularly issue. The fact that he compares Packer fans defending Rodgers to Falcon fans defending Vick for dog fighting and Steeler fans to defending Roethlisberger for alleged rape is not fair. That is apples and oranges.

Personally, I think Florio saw an opportunity to jump on someone who is the new golden-boy of the NFL, as he puts it. When it came to fruition that his opinion wasnt supported by all the facts, he should have given a more responsible response on what he presented. Instead, he does not blink an eye. Somewhat admirable because hes standing for his convictions, but also hypocritical for someone who often attacks others for not accepting responsibility or owning up to what they say.
