Some comments:

You make good points here Chris. Athletes, even though role models, are only human as well. The fact that Jan had come out and acknowledged that he has signed things for her in the past shows that people, even athletes are able to make mistakes.
Mike Florio trying to make this a bigger story than it needs to be. I had cancer 10 years ago and if I went to get someones autograph and got rejected would I hate them? Hell no. Just the fact that I was able to see one of my sports heros would be good enough for me.

ANYTHING written by Florio is absolute bs. Always is.
Florio himself would snub just about anyone, if only someone would ask him for HIS autograph.
I got away from PFT a while back, as all Florio does is bash on people and try to stir the pot whenever he can.
And I know for a fact, that a lot of other people feel the same way about this guy.

So, Aaron Rodgers has already signed MULTIPLE autographs for this woman and now some people got their panties in a bunch because he didn't give her another one? FTH? Firstly, why on earth would this woman be bothering Rodgers for yet another autograph when he's already been generous with her? Look, I'm very sorry this poor woman is suffering from cancer-it's a horrible, horrible disease that steals too many people. However, terminal illness doesn't give a person the right to constantly harass professional athletes for free stuff.
Secondly, like both the woman involved and Chris Chase said, this was all blown out of proportion. Rodgers probably was in a hurry, recognized that he'd already signed a crapload of things for this woman, and went on his way. Leave the poor man alone.
And hell, I'm a Bears fan and I hate the Packers but still feel compelled to defend Rodgers for the sheer ridiculousness of that fan video.

Rodgers took a bunch of kids from a local Boys & Girls Club bowling (I think he started with about 100 and told the B&G Club to increase it to some number over 125 kids). He paid for everything for the kids and gave them each $100 to go Christmas shopping, and he absolutely didn't want anyone from the press to put this story out. How do I know it's true? The B&G Club in my town confirmed it after hearing it from the Green Bay club. Bet Florio wouldn't put that story out.

Seriously Florio? Nice of you to look at an isolated incident - one in which you had no idea of the circumstances around- to try to get your hack name in the headlines by assassinating a guy with good character!

Wow, cannot believe this story even needs to be brought up. Chris Chase doesn't know the half of what Rodgers does for those that are less fortunate. What I don't understand is why Mike Florio needed to open his trap up and comment on it. I'm sure this guy has followed Arodg all year and knew everything he did....or saw the video and because he's a low-talent media correspondent felt the need to blow the story up. Just like so many in the media that suck....let's create a story and blow it up so I can get noticed. At least the cancer patient isn't as stupid as Florio!! Get your facts straight before you go in front of the world and talk out of your azz!!

How can you read this article  and then read Florio's bashing of Rodgers' and not be upset as a human being? I never really liked Florio in the first place but now? Fuck him.

I know Rodgers would never do this but in a normal case couldn't this be grounds for defamation?

Was it libelous?
1. Would the communication--either on its face, in light of outside facts, or by implication--tend to injure someone's reputation?
2. Is the communication provably false?
3. Could the audience reasonably believe the communication referred to this particular individual?

Florio asserts that Rodgers is an "ass" that deliberately ignores cancer patients despite the fact that their is plenty of evidence of Rodger's doing the exact opposite. Florio went out of his way to knowingly manipulate the contents of a video clip to attack an innocent professional athlete.

His opinion laid no claim to fact though which is why Florio can probably get away on free speech protection but I think Florio's article exemplified actual malice. Actual malice means that when the defamatory statements were published, the communicator either (1) knew they were false or (2) published with disregard of truth of falsity--that is, with serious doubts that the statements were true. Florio did nothing to verify the statements he was making, he merely formed an opinion of a person based off a 3 second video clip.

Florio is also most helped by the fact that he got his information from another news agency. If anyone were to be sued for reckless disregard it would be WBAY because that's what Florio based his editorial on.

Obviously there's no legal course of action to be taken--and obviously I'm just an annoyed, frustrated and ticked off Packers/Rodgers' fan--but I feel that a person with Florio's stature needs to have a bit more journalistic integrity. He should have done more research on Rodgers' character and the difference he's made in the cancer community outside of this incident. It's a shame that he's a nationally recognized reporter when he's spouting such libel.

Aaron.. let it slide off your back..

http://blogs.greenbaypressgazette.com/blogs/gpg/insider/2011/01/18/rodgers-criticized-for-not-signing-autograph/

Patrick: Is the video representative of what actually happened in that situation?

Rodgers: Well Jan is a great fan and we have an incredible fan base that travels well and Id like to thank all the fans that showed up in Atlanta. But we had a ton of fans at the airport Ive met Jan on previous occasions, Ive signed for her. At this point, you know, as the video shows, on this trip you know I didnt see her. I didnt sign for her and this kind of has turned into something I didnt really expect. But I think the people of Green Bay they know how I feel about them and how much I appreciate their support and like I said, this turned into something I didnt really expect.

Other quotes from that article:

WBAY has since pulled the original video and aired a follow-up story in which Cavanaugh said Rodgers has signed items for her in the past, including a pink No. 12 jersey the week before as the Packers prepared to travel to Philadelphia for their wild-card playoff game.

Cavanaugh on Monday said she is upset that Rodgers is receiving criticism.

I was terribly upset this morning because I did not realize what was online, and opened up my email, and I was just shocked, Cavanaugh told WBAY.

I am very unhappy with people making so much out of this, because this really isnt that big of a deal.

An apology to Aaron Rodgers, Packers fans, and Jan Cavanaugh

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers appeared today on The Dan Patrick Show. During the interview, Rodgers addressed the video that appeared over the weekend on WBAY-TV in Green Bay, with Rodgers walking past Packers fan and cancer survivor Jan Cavanaugh as she sought an autograph.

Ive met Jan on previous occasions, Rodgers said. As the video shows, I didnt see her. I didnt sign for her. It turned into something I didnt really expect.

The images from the now-yanked story shows a terminal at Austin Straubel Airport containing a group of Packers fans, seeing the Packers off to Atlanta on Friday of last week. In the video, Cavanaugh explains that she has a pink hat that she hopes Rodgers will sign it. And the very next image shows Rodgers strolling by with buds in his ears and the force field demeanor that we often see from celebrities who are being pursued by paparazzi.

When I saw the video for the first time, I cringed. Many of you did the same. But then I did what we bloggers (or whatever we are) all too often do I fired off a rebuke of Rodgers without considering anything else about the other things he has done, both publicly and privately, over the years.

Gregg Doyel of CBS has provided an excellent look at Rodgers good deeds, including his work for Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer. You should read Greggs article. Its an eye opener. And I commend Rodgers for his efforts. In many respects, he has shown his appreciation of and concern for the citizens of Green Bay and Wisconsin. If Packers fans hadnt previously embraced him like theyd embraced Brett Favre, their reaction to the criticism of Rodgers from me and others shows that they now have.

I apologize to Rodgers for painting him with an unjustifiably broad brush based on a very brief slice of his life. It was wrong to jump to conclusions about whether he treats fans properly, and whether he understands the connection between the fans who support him and the money he makes. Though some have argued that true character is revealed in those fleeting moments, the whole truth about a man falls somewhere between his best days and his worst days. For Rodgers, theres no reason to believe that the truth isnt a lot closer to the best than the worst.

I apologize to Packers fans for distracting you from the afterglow of a game that has ushered in a new golden age of Green Bay football. With a stirring win over the top-seeded Falcons and a historic postseason contest against the Bears on the horizon, you shouldnt have had to worry about an opinion that I delivered too quickly, too strongly, and too stubbornly. I allowed emotions based on my own experiences to overcome reason, and I hope in the future to be able to take a step back before sharing the full thrust of my initial reaction on these pages, especially when the reaction is fueled by emotion based on my own experiences.

I also apologize to Jan Cavanaugh. As Armando Salguero explained it earlier today during my weekly visit with WFTL in South Florida, I tried to rescue a damsel in distress before determining whether she wanted to be rescued. (Actually, thats sort of how I met my wife.) I should have realized that this would bring attention she doesnt want or need, and I would have if I hadnt shared the full thrust of my initial reaction without thinking it through or looking into the good things Rodgers has done.

No one with PFT or NBC has asked me to apologize, and no one has forced me to apologize. (We continue to have full editorial control over the content of the site, and NBC has honored that commitment since day one of our partnership.) Ive had two nights to sleep on it and plenty of other time to think about it. Once my anger at being wrongfully accused of running a payola scheme subsided and my Italian nature to never give in wore off, I realized that I felt bad. And I realized that Id only feel better if I apologized.

Hopefully, weve all learned something from this experience. I know I have. And rather than listing, as I ordinarily would, all the other lessons that I think everyone else involved in this situation should learn, Ill shut up and move on and let folks come to their own conclusions about what they may do differently when confronted with similar circumstances in the future.
