Very cool to see Clay get it. I'm not surprised because even though his numbers fell off during the season, nobody else in the league really emerged to steal his thunder. One surprise from the vote tallies, though, is that Julius Peppers finished way back, in fifth place. I would have expected him to be a close second:

The top five in voting
1. Clay Matthews, OLB, Packers 188
2. Troy Polamalu, S, Steelers 148
3. Cameron Wake, OLB, Dolphins 64
4. James Harrison, OLB, Steelers 45
5. Julius Peppers, DE, Bears 44
(Note: 609 NFL players, coaches and executives voted for this award.)

Its Sporting News DPOY

Right, this is not the AP(Associated Press) DPOY, the one that "matters".

However, well deserved anyway! I dont know if there was a single defense player that garnered more attention, double, tipple teams, blatant holds *every* game that CMIII.

I read what I wrote and it sounds like I am against him getting it. I'm not at all against it, and I think he has the talent to deserve it. I just believe that his numbers have decreased immensely because the other teams have been double teaming him, and that generally the DPOY (no matter who chooses it, SN or AP) is chosen based on stats. Therefore, I am surprised he got it.

Yeah, that's hilarious.

I'm surprised Clay won this one. I guess he really does have the respect of his peers. That first step, motor, work ethic, and demeanor must have been appreciated. I, even as a Packers fan, wouldn't give him the award this season. He started off like a mad man, but trailed off after injury. Oh well, it's not like I'm mad about it.

C'mon, you can't say something like that without saying who clearly deserves it much more than CM3.

Well the votes were by coaches and players and maybe these guys knew he was getting doubled throughout the year and coaches were game planning for him. I do agree with peeps here that Im surprised he won also; he didnt even have the highest sack number ... but again if a coach on different teams often talks about an opposing LB and how you need to double team him perhaps he gains respect and maybe even when he does make plays he's a good sportsman.

i love this dude, but dpoy? you have to be kidding me. he's not even in the top 5 of all OLBs. 😃

lmao he went by sacks and threw in Suggs. Nice.

Wake didn't have an interception, less tackles, less passes defensed, and he didn't have a touchdown either. Clay played in 14 and a half games compared to 16 for Wake.

I think Clay is a bit over rated, but I don't think Cameron Wake is a more better linebacker than Clay.

Wake had 12 tackles for loss compared to Matthews 5. Wake also had more pressures according to PFF.

Suggs, probably the best run stopping 3-4 OLB out there. But ok, lmao.

Also lol @ more better

Why are we talking about number of sacks? Woodson came nowhere close to leading the league in sacks when he won the award. I would guess the voters look at overall impact the player has on the field as opposed to purely a statistical measure.

beast (7h) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (12h) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (12h) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (13h) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (13h) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (13h) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (13h) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (17h) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
dfosterf (17h) : Zero- Did you see what I posted about Voice of Reason and his wife? She posted over at fleaflicker that they are both "In"
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Well, not crazy, it makes sense. Crazy I didn't notice/find it earlier

Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him

dfosterf (5-Aug) : I'm going to call that a good move.
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : You can have my 12th Rd for your 2nd round

beast (2-Aug) : I believe it's technically against the CBA rules, but Jerry just calls it a simple unofficial chat... and somehow gets away with it.
beast (2-Aug) : Jerry Jones is infamous for ̶n̶e̶g̶o̶t̶i̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ chatting with players one on one... and going around the agent.

Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Do the Commanders risk losing a top WR with an emerging QB just because he's turning 30 and potentially risk damaging the rebuild from
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Turns 30 this September, plays at a high level and Washington has some cap space I believe
