Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop cashes in
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 4, 2011, 12:01 PM EST

Once again, Packers G.M. Ted Thompson has re-signed one of his developing young players for the long haul. This time, it came at a very team-friendly price.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop, 26, has agreed to a four-year, $19 million extension with the team. Thats nice coin for a former sixth-round pick, but its a steal considering Bishops versatile play this year.

Long considered a toolsy linebacker that Packers fans wanted to see more of, Bishop has emerged as a quality starter following Nick Barnett injury. Bishop has 103 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception this season.

Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com writes that Bishops deal indicates that either Collins or A.J. Hawk likely wont be back next year. Hawk certainly needs to re-negotiate his contract to return, although thats been the case all along. (Hawk is due $10 million next season. Barnett is due $6 million.)

At such a reasonable price for Bishop, its possible the Packers could bring back all three. The Packers have options, which is exactly what Thompson wants.

I think he means Barnett instead of Collins as to whom won't be back next year.

Writing on the wall for Barnett, though?

When we first adopted the 3 - 4 I had mentioned Nick Barnett being moved to the outside, but Shawn or Matt rightfully said that Nick won't succeed there because he can't shed blockers.

I wouldn't mind seeing Barnett and Matthews manning the OLB positions.

Barnett - Hawk - Bishop - Mathews

Wrong order, I'm sure.

I'm assuming (and hoping) he means Barnett and not Collins. I thought we just locked up Collins for a few years.

Yeah, he has to mean Barnett and not Collins. Great news getting Bishop signed. The defense has been better with him in, instead of Barnett, which means I think this is the kiss of death for Barnett.

Not Barnett. Hawk. There's no chance we'll pay Hawk the $10M he's supposed to get next year. Either he'll restructure AND Barnett will move outside, or Hawk will be traded. I'm hoping for the former:

Barnett -- Hawk -- Bishop -- Matthews

That's one badass LB corps!

Barnett really isn't a great OLB prospect in a 3-4.

As mentioned previous.. he can't take on blockers effectively, he isn't a very effective pass rusher and he at times is not disciplined.

I am all for him being tried outside.. but I don't expect him to excel at it.. but with the amount of 2 downs we play.. he could fit nicely into a roving type backer in those sets.
