Favre gets the free pass from a lot of Packer fans because he was the QB that ended the "God we suck" era. He should still be held accountable for his wrong doings which a lot of us have started doing.

Favre's offseason mannerisms over the last 6 or 7 seasons have been anything but honorable. I hold against him this: he had to go play for the Vikings. To me, that makes it personal. Did I actually want him to be injured in Lambeau - no. Did I think it was poetic justice that he was - yes. Did I approve of him being booed - yes I did and I would have joined in.

Right now for me, Brett's insistence on finishing his career a Viking just to beat the Packers keeps him from the ring of honor. Go fuck yourself Brett. But in a few years, I will probably change my mind.

Rodgers in this conversation is irrelevant.

Sometimes it is more difficult to be a good sport in winning than it is in losing.

I have played competitive golf all my life. It has taught me way more life skills than I can count. It is all about ettiquete, courtesy, and above all, respect of your fellow competitor. You compliment the successes of your opponent and shake hands after the round. You want them to play well while you play better. Partly, for these reasons, I feel that golf is the greatest game and the best life teacher of all the sports.

That being said....

Somehow, the respect of the opponent gets lost as fans of a team. I am even starting to see it in the Ryder Cup in golf. It is almost a rule that you cannont applaud a well done effort even in defeat, of your opponent.

Which brings me to Favre and how he was treated after the game. It was one of his most gutty performances of his career. Regardless of the mistakes he made, he still gave his team a chance to win in the end. The pass to Harvin at the end could not have been a more dramatic or better thrown ball. Well done on Brett's part.

After the game, it IMO would have been good sportsmanship to put behind all the crap from the last 3 years and given him an ovation as he left the field. It would have said as much about the Green Bay fans by displaying good sportsmanship in winning as it would to thank Favre for all he has done while with Green Bay. It would have been the gentlemanly thing to do.

It was personal. It wasn't just that it was the QB for the Vikings that they booed. Take a look at the end of other games. Fans (thousands of them) remained well after most of the players left the field just to boo Favre. They don't do that after other games.

As was said before, we came to love Favre (warts and all) because of his attitude on the field and the honest heartfelt answers off the field. Most of the trouble he would get in with the media was because he would be open to actually answering the question than to give "player speak". We looked past his drinking binges and Madison stories (Lolipops anyone?) when he was younger. Why? because we knew there was some of him that we wanted for ourselves. And because we too were not perfect, we accepted his faults, both on and off the field.

Those fans that stayed to boo were the jilted lover that can't forgive the past, and move on to the future. So he went to the rival team. Is he the first? of course not. To me it is petty. The man did a ton for this team, town, and state. Just because it didn't have the fairytale ending we idealistic fans wanted doesnt mean he doesn't deserve our respect.

I certianly understand the resentment but don't we, as Packer fans, hold ourselves to a higher level than what was displayed?

I would hope so.

Well written. I missed it until LTF quoted it.

I see how it's good sportsmanship to not boo Favre, but as a Viking fan, I honestly can't blame the boos. It just shocked me at how volatile those boos were, especially after the Packers gutted out a win. Me personally, I would be more about celebrating the win than booing a certain ex-Packer QB.

I guess to make it short, the booing didn't surprise me, the volatile booing after a Packer win did.

By the same token, didn't Favre gloat about beating the Packers twice last year? You think that didn't give him great joy, beating Green Bay?
We KNOW it did. He admitted as much. Did that make him a poor sport?

As i said, i myself would NOT have boo'd him. I don't agree with it. But did I get great joy seeing "his" team get beat by the Packers? You better believe i did.
It's all a part of sports. I was brought up like Tripp was. Be graceful both in winning and losing. If you can't be a good sport, you shouldn't be there.
But the fans paid for their tickets, and have the right to do either.

I've been to a couple full games, quite a few 4th quarters and there's always been tons of fans that stayed after the game was over.

Also, Brett gained a LOT from the City, State and organization. Let's not make this sound as if it's one way here, that's a little naive.

They all benefited from one another.

Even with that said, I still (as I said first) don't really agree with the booing of him leaving Lambeau Field. Before the game, during the game, of course. It's hard for me because I think the Vikings QB should be booed his ass off, but I don't think Brett Favre deserves it. However, he reveled in defeating us last year, both times more so than many other wins I've seen him in. That bothered me, but also since I don't know everything that happened. I thought, well, if you were wronged Brett, I'm happy for you. If not, I hope we beat your ass next year!

In my opinion, he got his, we got ours and I think we should have left it at that, meaning, booing was not really needed. I don't think he ever bad mouthed us Packers fans, in fact, he said we were the best fans, while wearing Jets and Vikings uniforms he's said that.

So he went to the rival team. Is he the first? of course not.

"Trippster" wrote:

Of course he wasn't the first player to go to a rival team, but can you think of another example that compares to this one? In other words, can you think of a player this prominent with this much history with one team who lobbied hard to join his arch-rival and ultimately succeeded? I can't think of any example from any sport that even comes close.
