I just made a list of the 53 players I want on our regular season roster. Sam Shields was the 52nd guy.

Who was #1? Rodgers? Woodson? Matthews? someone else? :thumbleft:

What order were you top 10 guys? :P

I only started numerically ranking after the obvious ones (Finley, Rodgers, Woodson etc...)

Gotta cut him. I remember before the preseason started all I kept hearing was "If he makes the team it'll be as a returner."

Well...yeah, he sucks at it. And he might improve(Couldn't get worse) but we don't have room for him. If we can practice squad him and give him another looksy next year as a return specialist\9th string CB, that'd be nice.

And Allen Barbre became a great starting RT...

We don't have room for him? ... It's basically Shields or Bush... I heard Bush made the mistake in kickoff coverage that lead to the Seahawks first big kick off return. And Shields did VERY well as the gunner on punts. And while Bush is better at CB right now, he's given up big play after big play and has little to no potential left while Shields seems to ave great potential.

All Shields has to do is beat out Bush and be one of the top 53 guys.

And that is only if Al Harris starts the season on the 53 man roster. If he starts it on PUP, then frankly I cannot see how Shields has not already made this team.

I have not completely given up on Shields as a returner. That kickoff that he mishandled was a very weird one--a low liner that bounced erratically, and as usual the blocking was no good so the cover team was all over him by the time he got to the ball. If his confidence is not completely shot, maybe he can learn from that play and move on.

To answer tromadz's point, when people said that Shields' only chance to make the team was as a returner, he had not yet shown his skills at DB. But since then he's looked surprisingly good as a DB. And he seems to have more upside than some of the guys he's competing with.

You heard wrong. He contained the outside well. The reason you 'heard' that is because his jersey was visible as it happened. It was visible because he was correctly containing the outside.

Shields vs. Bush. Whoever wins, we lose.

Not why your so down on Shields. Is it because he wasn't drafted? ... Harris didn't make his first team and turned out pretty good. Williams wasn't drafted and turn out pretty good. Shields has shown a ton of raw potential. He may not do anything great thing year but he could a couple years down the line.

And this year he might be a great gunner on punts.

Not at all. I love underdog stories. The bottom line is I didn't follow camp\OTAs like I normally do but what I did hear about this guy was how he's a great returner. Um, not on gamedays he isn't.

I'm not "down" on Shields persay. I'm down on players sucking and hurting the team. I'll root for him and hope for the best as I always do but...yikes.

Where did you hear that? I read a lot of stuff about the Packers, and I never heard that Shields was a great returner. I heard that he was considered to have potential as a returner if he could hold onto the ball. Unfortunately, he hasn't done that. But he's been playing DB well enough to possibly make the final roster.

Well he didn't suck or hurt the team at gunner where he got to the returner so fast the returner often had to call a fair catch. And he didn't suck or hurt the team when he caught the ball while on the defense for an INT.

The kid can cover, that's and great potential is enough to earn the kid a spot IMO.

O there were rumors going crazy that Shields was a great returner from predraft to well into OTAs... those rumors were not true and misguided and I really don't know how they because so strong.

But people were talking about if you put the ball in his hands on a return what amazing things he could potential do, which he's speed and quickness. Probably is they forgot about something... the whole getting into his hands first and the reason he was moved to CB from WR (he can't catch).

I have been saying that Shields was probably moved to CB for exactly that reason. I still think he has enough skill to make it as CB and he is a pretty good gunner.

beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
