That kickoff that he mishandled was a very weird one--a low liner that bounced erratically, and as usual the blocking was no good so the cover team was all over him by the time he got to the ball.

He can't let it bounce. Footballs always bounce weird, he's got to go catch that first time. There is no excuse for that botched kickoff return.

As for his prospects for making the team. I like what I've seen as a defensive back and he had a great play as a gunner. He also is a good returner once he has the ball in his hands. Unfortunately, he can't field a damn punt or kickoff at the moment so it never gets to the point where he gets to run with the ball. That said I think you keep him for his ability as a gunner and potential as a defensive back. And if he could ever learn to field a punt/kickoff (as unlikely as that seems right now) give him another shot at returning.

I would rather see him stay on the team as a return man, and that being about it. Just a thought...If he is a CB he has more to learn. He has the tools to return. The one thing(which is big) that he has to learn to do to return kicks is catch the ball...If he can do that he could be electric.

Practice Squad. I really wish we'd cut Bush. But at this point(with Harris' status TBD and Bell on IR), we are kinda stuck with one of these two. I doubt DJ Clark is any better

Secondary should probably look like this:
Woodson
Williams
Underwood
Lee
Harris
Bush

Collins
Martin
Blackmon

Bigby
Burnett

I want him forcing opposing punt returners to call fair catch.

Keep him....but NEvER use him as a returner.
He has proven he can't do it.

I'm not "down" on Shields persay. I'm down on players sucking and hurting the team.

"beast" wrote:

Well he didn't suck or hurt the team at gunner where he got to the returner so fast the returner often had to call a fair catch. And he didn't suck or hurt the team when he caught the ball while on the defense for an INT.

The kid can cover, that's and great potential is enough to earn the kid a spot IMO.

what I did hear about this guy was how he's a great returner.

"tromadz" wrote:

Where did you hear that? I read a lot of stuff about the Packers, and I never heard that Shields was a great returner. I heard that he was considered to have potential as a returner if he could hold onto the ball. Unfortunately, he hasn't done that. But he's been playing DB well enough to possibly make the final roster.

"Greg C." wrote:

O there were rumors going crazy that Shields was a great returner from predraft to well into OTAs... those rumors were not true and misguided and I really don't know how they because so strong.

But people were talking about if you put the ball in his hands on a return what amazing things he could potential do, which he's speed and quickness. Probably is they forgot about something... the whole getting into his hands first and the reason he was moved to CB from WR (he can't catch).

"tromadz" wrote:

I guess he's awesome then....

You can't take that INT serious in any way. Everyone reading these words could have made that catch.

And I'm not sold 1 bit that "the kid can cover." Do it against the ones(no, seriously, game 3 I'd like to see him play the first half) and then maybe he'll prove his worth.

So far, several mishandled punts\kicks that could be game killers. Are his gunner skills that great to warrant a roster spot?

For the record, his return on the pick was less than impressive, but hey, he caught it.

Crazy Al or someone that covets speed will snap this kid fast..

"pack93z" wrote:

Crazy Al would indeed snap up this kid.

He would be crazy not to. Which makes Al not crazy by my math.

Al's team is 2-0

I have a vision on Green and Gold and Silver and Black in Dallas for the final game of the season.

The guy's definitely a project but give him a couple of years to mature before you judge him.

I seem to recall people writing off Finley in his rookie season which included dropped passes and media outbursts.

Different position, but Shields needs time too.
