Just like I predicted in the first TG thread.

This will hurt the Chiefs. Teams will not be so open to negotiate with a team that plays ball like this in the future.

That's why you didn't see many teams trying to outbid each other here for TG. They knew Carl would try to screw them over, and the last thing you want to do is get in a bidding war for a commodity from a guy trying to fleece you. It's a shame the Hunts can't see this and clean house.

Wow.

My Niner friend just relayed the news. I'm now really pissed at the Chiefs. TG and Donald Lee, that would have been awesome. I don't know if everyone realizes this, but TG is a dang good blocker, someone we could have used.

This is a shame. Props to Ted Thompson for trying. It wasn't his fault. Stupid Chiefs.

I'll be honest, I hated the pick then, and I'm not crazy about it now. This has zero to do with Rodgers' performance. He has played very well. However, we didn't need a QB, and frankly, had there not been this burning desire to get him on the field I think Favre would still be here. Picks like that and Nelson make me wonder if we wouldn't have won a Super Bowl had we drafted a few more players to fill specific needs.

"WhiskeySam" wrote:

We did need a QB because we didn't know how long Brett was going to play. He could have retired after that season and we'd have been stuck with Craig Nall.

Also, I don't think there was a 'burning desire' to get Rodgers on the field that caused Brett to be a Jet. I'm pretty confident that it had a lot to do with Mr Favre retiring and the team having to move forward.

Per Ted and Mike and others in the staff, none of them thought Brett was going to retire and none of them wanted him to. But you can't talk a guy out of retirement because then he's playing for the wrong reasons.

I don't think any of what happened with Favre happens if the Rodgers pick isn't made in the first place. I thought that was a sign they were trying to push Brett out then, and I haven't seen anything to change my opinion. I think both sides have merit to their positions, and we'll have to agree to disagree since this has been belabored enough.

"WhiskeySam" wrote:

Uhhh, in 2005 when that pick was made Brett Favre was already saying he was considering giving it up and the thinking was if he DID come back it would only be another year or two.

Your QB isn't 100% committed on staying so you pass on a QB put in your lap to show him your love? Wouldn't that be a little more than dumb?

I cannot see in any way what-so-ever where this scenario when Rodgers could have been the first guy off the board somehow falls all the way to us and that's a SIGN the Packers wanted Brett gone.

That's a real stretch there for me Whiskey. ESPECIALLY when you know there is no team chomping at the bit to put a rookie QB anywhere near a regular season game unless there is just no other choice.

Every year it seems like the Packers are so close to getting a good player here via trade or even in the draft. Almost had Marshawn Lynch in the draft. Almost had Randy Moss. Almost had Tony G. Makes me sick.

That very well might have been the largest win in obtaining Tony... fans are getting tired of almost.

I don't hope we go hog wild in spending in the free agent market.. but building a little excitement here or there with a "name" add would break some of the "cheap" or conservative talk within the Packer fan base.

I agree.. it would be nice to get over the "almost" hump..

I dont think the cheap label would be so easy to stick if we weren't consistently well under the salary cap. You don't get to roll that money over to the next year. You spend it or lose it. When a team appears close where one or two players might put them over the top, but they don't acquire them and have a large sum under the cap to be spent that criticism is going to be made whether it's fair or not. We heard the same thing from Eagles fans during their run when they always came up a little short in the playoffsbut hadn't spent right up to the cap.

I understood the cap deal this year basically two fundamental reasons.

1) Uncapped year and unlimited spending on the horizon.

2) We have several players that need to be re-upped this year.. rolling a good chunk of the bonus and salary into this year..

That is smart business. however it does open the door for people to complain about lack of "splashes".. or addressing areas of immediate need.. say offensive guards.

Agreed. I've been in Thompson's corner to this point (but by no means have I been totally happy with everything he's done or not done), but I really want to see him do something via trade or free agency in the upcoming off-season. He's proven to me that he can work a draft, but in this day and age that alone isn't enough. He rebuilt our depth masterfully; now it's time to go out and find those couple pieces that'll put us over the "almost" hump.
