We gave up a third round pick for Jermichael Finley.

lol what the hell? we gave up a pick for him? c'mon, we DRAFTED him jeez. Way to make it sound negative. The guy is young and talented.

We are a bit off subject with Finley but, many of the draft "experts" felt he came out of school one year too soon. Ted did not draft him out of need. In a couple of years I think Packer fans will like what he brings to the team.

I agree wpr. Finley is all potential. I don't watch much college ball, but he wowed me quite a few times when he was at Texas.

Back on topic.. a couple of points on this failed attempt..

1) A 3rd rounder for a aged skill position player is fair.. if they wanted more a late rounder maybe.

2) We are looking at one of the most frugal GM's in the NFL.. Carl Peterson.. look on long it took last year for him to pull the trigger on the Trent Green trade.. he is of the mindset that he owns a piece of gold in every aspect.

3) Honestly, I wanted to acquire TG.. it would have helped our middle passing game and made Aaron focus on utilizing his TE's, a glowing weakness in his game right now. And I can't tell if it is a TE problem or lack of attention to the position on Aaron's part.

4) It might have gave some of the fans a boost to an injury riddled season to date. A little midseason excitement might have done wonders.

5. If you haven't learned yet, Ted has a compensation calculator someplace, whether it is a formula or a feel.. but he doesn't push the envelope past a set price. The Chiefs leaked a 3rd rounder as a break point, he entered the fray with that in mind and didn't budge. He is a man of conviction, that is very clear.

6. I like the fact that Ted is doing very little talking this season to the media.. wise choice.. because he is a poor PR man. I am convinced he does a good job with player evaluations and roster makeup for the most part.. above average in the very least.. but the man cannot be the face of the front office for the media.. he just doesn't possess that skill. Doesn't make him any less of a GM though..

Judging by the 3rd or 2nd we'll probably get for Favre and the 4th for Moss, Peterson should have been happy with a 3rd or 4th for Gonzales especially during the middle of the season when you won't get the benefit of camp or the whole season out of him. Doesn't seem like he really wants to trade him, Gonzales won't increase in value with age.

Well.....you can't say Ted didn't try!!!

Sure you can. It doesn't make it true nor does it stop some people from saying it just because Ted doesn't do what they want him to do.

Most likely he has some chart or formula like other GMs that they base a player's value on. There may be some wiggle room up or down for negotiating, but the baseline is usually established on some formula for his value plus salary cap considerations. You're right about Ted being a poor PR man, but isn't that part of the GM job especially when you don't have an owner to be the face of the franchise to the media?

reading what Gonzo has said, Peterson told him that a 3rd would get the deal done. Now Ted offered a 3rd and Peterson refused it and requested a 2nd. We have to remember that Thompson has a job to do beyond this trade. If he gets the reputation that he's soft in negotiations, that'll follow him and we'd continue to get fleeced. I would've loved Gonzalez on our team, but not at the expense of our GM getting jerked around. If what Gonzo said is true, I'm glad Ted Thompson didn't fold.

This was another example of Thompsons unwillingness to pull the trigger on a blockbuster trade to obtain another weapon on offense.

Let's not mention that Carl is notoriously tough to deal with there Mr. McGinn.

Classic belly-aching (McGinn, not you). Another talking head (or possibly even this one) would have shat a brick freaking out if Ted had sent a 2nd for "an aging tight end on a squad that already has ample offensive weapons", or some such crap. Not that I wouldn't be happy to have a guy like Gonzo, but a 2nd is just too high given what we've already got, IMO.

I sure wouldn't want to be the GM of any team in this league -- talk about a no-win situation.

Off-topic (at least a little): I wonder if a 3rd to Philly would have gotten us Lito Sheppard... it's fun to dream.
