Our needs: OT, OLB, S, CB, KR.

WR just isn't one of them.

What do we do if Greg Jennings gets injured? Worst case scenario: Jennings is lost for the year. You are down a play-maker, and a key one at that. Jones and Jordy may be good, but they have yet to show they are in the same league as Jennings, play making wise..

My fix on the O-line involves inserting Lang at LG, turning Colledge back into his real position of LT (lets not read too much into his perfomance against Jared Allen last year when he was playing on a a sprained ankle). Colledge wouldn't even play unless Clifton got hurt, and he's probably better than most of the second tier OT's this year anyway.

Dakota, I love this trade proposal because I think it's well thought out. But my problem with Colledge at LT is that, frankly, he has not shown anything that indicates he could be a long-term LT.

At G, he has had issues with leverage and hand placement. Bigger players (DTs) who aren't as quick as others (DEs) have been able to nock down Colledges hand and get penetration. They've been able to get under him and drive him back. Last year, he may have played on one ankle but his performance was frankly disturbingly bad.

There is not a whole lot to think those two problems will get solved when he is a LT. And if they don't, Aaron Rodgers is going to be a dead man walking.... I don't even want to imagine the number of sacks we could potentially give up.

Now go tell Rock to stop talking silliness about getting rid of Jordy and Jones in trade for Marshall. :pottytrain2:

"dfosterf" wrote:

I think Rock's comment about giving up both James and Jordy was more to show how enthusiastic he is about adding Marshall to the team.

Frankly, this idea has me captured as well (although it is an idea, and not even a rumor [yet]).

Driver has a bit left in him. Jennings is terrific. If you add Marshall, you're adding a player that can break tackles not with speed or agility, but because of his sheer strength. Frankly, I'd rather give up Jones than Jordy becaue I think Jordy has a promising future.

Warren Sapp and Darren Sharper, on State of the Packers on NFL Total Access last week, said hands down the Packers have the best receiving core in the game. You add Marshall to Driver / Jennings / Finley.... this team, in my opinion, has special written all over it. You maintain 1st and 2nd round picks, and you can trade back your 1st to reacquire a third.

Now I'm pumped up... I wonder if Ted has even looked into adding Marshall.

I don't know if Colledge has it or not, but I know he can't handle the DT's in our division, and that's why I think Lang would really excel on the interior with Sitton, because he has the strength. Lang was an awesome pick last year, but we need him starting not playing super sub.

At 23 we aren't getting starting material at LT, so if we're settling for a project, why waste a first round pick.

What Foster said (several posts earlier).

IMO the only priority lower for this team than WR is getting a starting quarterback. Sorry, Dakota, the team should no more be spending serious attention to Brandon Marshall than it should be spending serious attention to Sam Bradford.

Some times I just want to stamp my feet and throw a tantrum. If Greg Jennings goes down, that's a major blow. But right now, if that happens, the team has two stud receiving threats (Driver, Finley), and two reasonably good ones (Jones, Nelson). On the other hand, the OL has one stud (Sitton), one up and comer who hasn't yet proven himself as a starter (Lang), a solid center (Wells), and....

A RT who is on the decline.
A LT who is even more on the decline.
And a bunch of guys.

I'd rather have to rely on Jones AND Nelson starting at WR than have to rely on Spitz, Colledge, et al to start.

And I'd definitely be content with Jones/Nelson fighting it out for #3 than have to depend on any current "depth" on the OL.

The only way Marshall should get a look is if, when Ted Thompson says "you'd be no higher than our #3", he said, "That's cool!"
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

You know, the first part of the reply is pretty bad. Yeah, many teams are in trouble if their top play maker goes down. So for that reason we shouldn't address that concern?

My point was, there is no such thing as too many play-makers. The Packers can sure up their depth with a play-maker like Marshall.

As for none of them wanting to be back-ups... you do realize we often start out with 3-WR sets, right? That means the 3 WRs are credited with getting a start. From a purely statistical point of view, that fills their need to "start" on paper.

But really, you're telling me a player like Driver would say "Uh, no I want out" because he can no longer be #1 on the depth chart? Really?

Look at the dynamics of our three receiver set. Driver and Jennings (& sometimes Finley) occupy the inside receiver positions because of their speed and quickness. Marshall is different, he has the strength to be put on the outside and still get separation because it his hard to press him. He runs nice routes, so he can get separation in short areas.

Marshall adds a unique dynamic to our receiving core, and frankly his skill set IMO complements Driver and Jennings - especially in 3 WR sets.

Yeah, there is only one football to go around, but you know the vast majority of the players will shut-up and play when they see they are part of a team that wins.

Also, Marshall said flat out that he longed for a fresh start somewhere else, because he was haunted by the death of his teammate a couple of years ago. I'm willing to say that a fresh start, even as not the primary option, will be okay for Marshall. Especially if you show him the money.

Maybe we should address the concern that we have one of the worst offensive lines in the league, and a secondary that gives up 50+ points in the playoffs? If we added Marshall to our team, we're just wasting talent. Our team may be better, but with the same price as Marshall comes, I'm pretty darn sure we can improve other positions so that it makes a much bigger difference.

"all_about_da_packers" wrote:

I realize your point. But with 3 of them and Finley, there's no way one of them's not gonna be pissed off with the lack of balls they are receiving. Plus, Jones and Nelson, who have done nothing to show that they won't be great (quite to the contrary, they've done really well as #3s and #4s go). We'd have 5 great wide receivers, but at the same time our offense is being killed by sacks and penalites. We need to fix the OL. We don't need another WR.

But really, you're telling me a player like Driver would say "Uh, no I want out" because he can no longer be #1 on the depth chart? Really?

"all_about_da_packers" wrote:

Read my earlier post. I wouldn't say Driver would do that, but I find it disrespectful to reduce a guys playing time, despite having multiple 1000+ yard seasons in a row and hasn't shown many signs of slowing down just because his age, which is just a number, is getting up.

I've omitted a few parts from your post, but that's only because most of it is true. However I've never argumented against said sections, so I will also not reply to them.

I like that our WRs are humble and generally great teammates. Keep those prima-donas like Marshall out of here.

About the only way I'd be on board with this trade is if
A.) the coaching staff has lost confidence in either Jordy or Jones and Denver would take that WR in a trade with a later pick.
B.) Driver or Marshall were ok with being #3 on the depth chart
C.) The coaching staff actually thought Marshall could be salvaged and wasn't destined for TO or Moss levels of doucheness
