My point, is the healthcare system that exists today does not afford the same opportunity to all of its citizens.. just those that can afford 10 k a year in healthcare or those that get a government paid free ride.

How can you consider a government employee's healthcare a free ride when it is a condition of a contract he or she signed? I suppose all of the Packer's players are getting a free ride too.

People in the private sector agree to terms of health care when they take a job. Usually it's an 80/20 plan, but it is pretty well known that a person in the private sector makes considerably more money than the government employee.

Now, the independent contractor or small business man is on his own for health care. But this person has made this choice to be his own boss. This is the person with the largest argument and biggest concerns going forward.

Not to roast you chestnuts 93, but I think it is sour grapes to call a person who works for the government getting a free ride for health care. They still have deductibles and copays, and you can bet as health care rises, they will be paying for a part of it either in lost future salary increases or premium costs.

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

This very argument boggles my mind.. the legislation just passed mandates that everyone shall have to purchase health care.. isn't that a step better than today with so many uninsured members of society draining "profits" from healthcare because they don't pay?

"Formo" wrote:

You ALWAYS end up paying for your healthcare. It may be in different ways, but you ALWAYS end up paying.

And in my honest opinion, no, it isn't a step better.

BTW, where were you this weekend? I was stuck at the in-laws and had no way of getting away from the MIL. 😛

Shawn, should the government force you to buy helmets for your bicycles (or your car)? Should they force you to buy condoms, toothbrushes, soap, vitamins, organic food, or any of a number of other things that are good for you? Should they force you to get broadband over dial-up? Or to read the news instead of comics? Or to go to bed at a reasonable hour?

It's not the government's job to make us do the right thing for ourselves.

No.. I don't hold any ill will towards any employee that gets a good insurance package as part of their employment.

Well lets see.. I have to wear my seat belt, I have to drive 55, I have to get Digital TV and spend money to update my tv to get the open broadcasts... I could crank out a laundry list of where the government infringes upon my liberties..

Doesn't matter the party in power.. they take just the same.. but how dare they try to straighten out the greed in the health care..

Again.. would I rather have a different alternative to correcting health care.. absolutely.. but sorry if I don't trust those in the game to fix it.

Ah, but that wasn't my question. My question was should you have to do these things?

I had car insurance before it was mandatory. I wear my seatbelt and I make those in my car do the same. I drive at safe speeds (though I do think our speed laws are out of touch with our modern technology). I don't have a TV, so that is irrelevant to me. But my question is should I have to do these things? I don't think I should be required to do them, any more than I should be told I can't drink alcohol. However, if I fail to exercise due responsibility in making choices that entail risk of harm to others, and I end up hurting someone else in the process, then I believe the hammer should be laid down upon me.

I believe in (almost) complete freedom, but I believe just as strongly in complete responsibility.

I think you've overthought yourself into exactly wear you want to go. Laws are made for the general good of society. You're free to walk yourself off a tall building but who should they send the bill to for scrapping your dumbass off the sidewalk? I guess the government will have to bail you out. This thread has run its course.

I don't follow. Are you arguing that such senseless acts as jumping off buildings should be outlawed? How are such laws enforceable? If someone decides to jump off the Empire State Building (as happened last week), how are you going to punish him? Some laws are pointless, no matter how sensible they may look on paper.

So with the reform.. the government is simply stating that you have to have health insurance.. yet you are free to purchase it of your choice.

And yes, not having health insurance and not paying paying your bills does have a negative harm to others as they are the ones that have to pay the increases to cover that unpaid debt.

So to recap.. you are free to purchase health insurance of your choice.. which is your responsibility to other citizens in the health care pool.. correct?

Again.. I am not in total support of this avenue taken by the government.. but I see little options but to place some regulations into a system that is spiraling out of control.. and service that is vital to every living breathing human being..

I wish the health care industry was different.. I wish the leeches of the system were cut off, I wish the health care burden was less per capita in this country.. I wish the country was the idealistic dream that was painted centuries ago.. but it isn't.

Again.. throw out a better plan for health care reform without the government getting involved.. I would love to hear it.
