No problem. I just wanted to point out that though I don't use things like "lol" or smileys as much as you do, I joke around almost as much as you on this site. I am almost never serious, unless I make it blatantly obvious I am.

While I can hold a certain amount of respect for admitting to your hypocrisy, you are indeed rationalizing.

You are a fairly intelligent young man NSD, but you are also idealistically naive in some respects.
You tout your "high standards" concerning how others should live their lives without knowing anything about their circumstances, yet you create a more attractive explanation of why your life is different.

Not everyone has the God given gifts of good mental and physical health, and not everyone is capable of higher education / training.
And yet many of these people are some of the most productive members of our society. Good, honest, hard-working, caring people, that through no fault of their own, find themselves in very hard times indeed.
They are the most vulnerable in a bad economy.

I believe that you will do well in your life ambitions, but you can not extend or dictate your somewhat narrow approach to how others live their lives.
Your viewpoints in this regard are somewhat ironic, considering your take on marriage and monogamy.

I am not trying to be over critical of you NSD, but with your own statements you have shown that you still have much to learn young Padawan.

It would be interesting to travel forward in time, to hear your view points say 40 years from now.

If I were you I'd listen to the old guy. Wisdom is either expensive or inexpensive. How you choose has much to do with how you roll through life. Non is a very reasonably wise young man, for example..I'm sure he heard the gnome.

Actually, Vikesrule, I didn't justify my actions one bit. I admitted that my actions are inconsistent with my principles. I said I rationalize my actions to myself, but I said even I don't find my rationalization convincing.

Frankly, if I weren't married, I would have held the line, but my wife basically said, "Um, no, you are NOT turning down free money." If I had a nickle for every time she's smugly told me she forged my signature on a document or application, I'd be rather well off.

If someone wants to tell me this makes me a pussy, I won't fault them one bit.

But as Foster pointed out, I am humble enough to take counsel, and I have certainly thought about your words a lot over the past few days.

My final point on the start of this thread.

We have almost an exactly similar system in use in Finland. Everyone is covered, with tax money. It works absolutely perfectly. But some people just have to be greedy, rather than think about people who were not covered earlier.

If you complain about Obama taking your liberties, having the right to pay for you healthcare was a stupid liberty to begin with.
This is a placeholder

Finland is a nation of 340,000 sq. km and 5.3 million people. The United States is a nation of 9.8 million sq. km and 309 million people. You cannot ignore the effects of scale. Just because a system works with such a diminutive -- and let's face it, relatively homogeneous -- country as yours does not mean it will work equally as well for a country as large and diverse as ours.

We shall see.

Seriously though.. is buying health care any different than than being forced to carry car insurance? Property taxes? Income tax?

No, it is no different. But you are talking to a guy that disagrees with being forced to put money towards all of the above mentioned 'duties'.
