Not everyone has the God given gifts of good mental and physical health, and not everyone is capable of higher education / training.
And yet many of these people are some of the most productive members of our society. Good, honest, hard-working, caring people, that through no fault of their own, find themselves in very hard times indeed.
They are the most vulnerable in a bad economy.

It's comments like these VR that make me really respect you, even though I have every reason not to.

I sometimes think that successful people that have never really been "tested" in life think the whole world is charmed like they are, and that we actually have a level playing field in life. True enlightenment comes through suffering, not reading textbooks, and spending your trust fund.

Here's an interesting little article in the Chicago Tribune, not exactly a hotbed of liberal reporting:

I also found this interesting, it's about the doctor in FL. who posted a sign saying if you voted for Obama seek your urological care elsewhere. Seems he doesn't really know what he's talking about.

Another missing element to Nonstop's toll theory and cost of road work.. gas tax is precisely designed to make those that use the roads shell out more coin.. heck I used to cross into La Crescent all the time for gas.. much lower with the gas tax.. but they make up for it in registration fees.

While I can hold a certain amount of respect for admitting to your hypocrisy, you are indeed rationalizing.

You are a fairly intelligent young man NSD, but you are also idealistically naive in some respects.
You tout your "high standards" concerning how others should live their lives without knowing anything about their circumstances, yet you create a more attractive explanation of why your life is different.

I believe that you will do well in your life ambitions, but you can not extend or dictate your somewhat narrow approach to how others live their lives.
Your viewpoints in this regard are somewhat ironic, considering your take on marriage and monogamy.

I am not trying to be over critical of you NSD, but with your own statements you have shown that you still have much to learn young Padawan.

It would be interesting to travel forward in time, to hear your view points say 40 years from now.

this reminds me of our school's crossing guard, gerald. he's a little on the slow side but has been there around 40 years now. he's a sweet old guy who wouldn't hurt a fly but has jumped in front of many a car so that a little one doesn't get injured. he's exactly the person who would be devastated by a cut back. i can't even imagine where else he could work. he certainly couldn't further his education due to his diminished mental capacity. he'd be a lost soul.

i'm all for individual responsibility but there ARE those who simply cannot do it on their own. while we may not be legally responsible to help them, i do believe we are morally responsible to do so.

Health insurers sue Mass. on rate denial
April 5, 2010 03:05 PM E-mail| |Comments (155)

By Robert Weisman, Globe Staff

A half dozen state health insurers, warning they could collectively lose hundreds of millions of dollars this year, today filed a lawsuit seeking to reverse a decision by Massachusetts regulators to block double-digit premium hikes.

The increases would have taken effect April 1 for plans covering thousands of small businesses and individuals.

The insurance carriers will go before a judge in state Superior Court Thursday seeking a preliminary injunction against last week's rulings by Insurance Commissioner Joseph G. Murphy to reject 235 of 274 premium hikes proposed by the health insurers.

Those rulings, following emergency regulations set by Governor Deval Patrick, marked the first time the state has used its authority to deny premium increases.

"What the commissioner did, we think, is going to create tremendous disruption in the marketplace," said Dean Richlin, a partner at Boston law firm Foley Hoag, who is representing the insurers.

Jason Lefferts, a spokesman for the insurance commissioner, this afternoon said his office had just learned of the lawsuit and had no immediate response.

Filing the suit were Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the state's largest health insurer, as well as five members of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans: Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Tufts Health Plan, Fallon Community Health Plan, Health New England, and Neighborhood Health Plan.

All are non-profit carriers. The complaint, filed about 2 p.m., alleges that the state Division of Insurance acted illegally in three ways: by imposing a rate cap it had no authority to impose, by pegging the rate cap to a measure - the medical consumer price index - that has no actuarial significance, and by violating a statutory requirement to enable insurers to charge adequate rates based on the projected utilization of medical care.

"As a result of the commissioner's action," Richlin said, "the insurance companies will experience substantial and, in some cases, staggering losses. We estimate the collective loss among all of the insurers will run into the hundreds of millions of dollars just for 2010. There are some number that will face near-term solvency problems."

More on the DoI's decision here .

Remember when I said that one of two things would happen: either regulators would be lax in their enforcement of price controls, or price controls will inevitably lead to reductions in service? We haven't even implemented this program on a federal level, and it's already starting on a state level -- and these are non-profit insurers. It seems I know a thing or two about basic economics (as does anyone who's ever had to balance a checkbook).

This situation is following a completely predictable and inevitable course. Within a couple of years, the system will fail -- as it must -- and the government will step in to announce that the free market has failed and that it must become the primary payer. It's happened before in other countries and with other services, and it will happen here.

All "non-profit" means is that distribution of the profits to the owners of the company is forbidden. The companies are still able to engage in every other kind of investment and asset handling that any other corporation can, and I'm sure executives are able to receive bonuses based on reaching certain company goals.

wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
