Excuse me?

Daryn Colledge is reportedly "furious" with the Packers for tendering him at just the second-round level.
Welcome to restricted free agent bizarro world, starring Colledge and Raiders owner Al Davis. Colledge blames the Packers for his putrid play last season, complaining that learning multiple positions hurt his development. Though he'd prefer to leave Green Bay, he's unlikely to draw free agent interest. Mar. 4 - 10:55 am et

Are Packers headed for more offensive line turmoil?
By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel

March 4, 2010 9:25 a.m. |(57) Comments

Green Bay - Close your eyes for a second and imagine this:

In the 2010 season opener, the starting offensive line for the Green Bay Packers goes like this: left tackle T.J. Lang, left guard Mike Iupati (rookie), center Scott Wells, right guard Josh Sitton and right tackle Allen Barbre.

Backups? Breno Giacomini, Stanley Daniels, Evan Dietrich-Smith, and a few draft picks.

The league-leading 51 sacks the Packers gave up last season might not look that bad.

With 13 hours left before the start of free agency, the possibility is there that the Packers could be without four players that started games on the offensive line last season: left tackle Chad Clifton, right tackle Mark Tauscher, guard Jason Spitz and left guard Daryn Colledge.

How likely is it that all four players will not return? Not very. The Packers have gotten the reputation the past few years of not showing any indication of getting a deal done, and then all of a sudden flipping a switch and doing the deal.

But could most of them not return? Possibly.

If Clifton is going to be back next season, that contract scenario is going to have to unfold again. Because as it stands right now, a contract for the 10-year veteran that has started 106 of the last 112 regular-season games the Packers have played is not in close to fruition.

Tauscher, whose return last season solidified the line last year in coach Mike McCarthy's opinion, will only be back by the start of free agency at 11:01 p.m. CT if his coach gets his way.

General manager Ted Thompson wanted to move on from Tauscher last season. But Barbre fell on his face and opened the door for Tauscher's return.

Thompson wants to do the same thing this year -- with either Lang or Giacomini taking Tauscher's spot -- but McCarthy has been pushing for Tauscher's return privately.

The Packers' trump card with both Spitz and Colledge, who are both restricted free agents, is that they can match any offer another team may make.

But most NFL observers expect the poison pill -- a provision in a contract that makes it monetarily impossible for the player's former team to match an offer -- to return this season.

That being said, it's hard to see a team getting that creative for a player in Spitz who, while talented and healthy, is coming off back surgery. And in Colledge, any team would be getting a player that has been up and down since he entered the league.

But it would not be surprising if a team came after Spitz. On draft day after his rookie season, at least one team offered the Packers multiple later-round picks for Spitz.

As for Colledge, privately he is furious with the Packers. He expected a first-round tender and likely did not get it (Colledge said on Boise radio last night he thought it was a second-round tender).

"If it's a second round, maybe I have a chance to move," Colledge said on KTIK. "Maybe I could be coming to a city near you."

Make no mistake, Colledge would like to leave Green Bay and his agent will be working hard to get a team to offer him a contract. He is tired of being forced to play multiple positions, which Colledge feels has hurt his development.

It's not a coincidence that the two best players on the offensive line last season were right guard Josh Sitton and center Scott Wells. Both have played the same position almost exclusively since joining the Packers.

Other players know that very well. That is why Colledge is not alone in his displeasure with the way the Packers have handled their offensive line.

And it's part of the reason why the Packers could be headed for a line reckoning.

Again, a lot of that is worst-case scenario.

Here's the most likely scenario:

* Packers cave on Clifton this afternoon, knowing they have no other options at left tackle.
* Tauscher is allowed to go free. Door still open to his return depending on what happens in draft.
* Spitz gets an offer but Packers match.
* Colledge gets no offers and has to sign his tender, so he reluctantly returns to the Packers.

But the point is the Packers have left themselves in a precarious position. After what they've gone through since Mike Wahle and Marco Rivera had to be let go to stay under the cap, you have to wonder why the Packers would even dance with this devil?

But here we are, and you can hear the music.

As the saying goes

"If he doesn't want to play for the packers"

"Stuff him"

O/L is our major concern, granted.

But if he goes, we move on.

Frankly, I think Colledge has a point. One can make a pretty decent case that our line has been mismanaged and that it's retarded his development.

Bedard seems to think that we are blowing right the f#ck by "extremely troubling" and going with "full-blown-fiasco" status in one fell swoop, on the eve of free agency, no less.

I wonder if Boldin or Tebow can play guard or tackle?

You don't see other teams in the league playing musical chairs with the lineman like we have... and quite honestly with the way we have developed guys I could see his point. I have said back to the 07 season against the Cowboys that we, under Campen, are failing to develop guys that can play and the only time at that point that they came out and played was when we sat their asses on the sideline.. then it seemed to light a fire..

With that being said.. I think it is bullshit that you have to lay blame there for your own failings as a player.. your the one that straps on that helmet every week and gets your ass handed to you in one on one battles.

It's a good point admittedly, but do you see Jason Spitz going out there and complaining to the media about getting the same tender and being in a similar situation?

Colledge has had a very up and down career, but at this stage, the guy needs to shut his mouth and get to work and try to keep his job that is going to be up for grabs in training camp or he could be finding himself riding the pine backing up Spitz and Sitton.

It's the economics of the business, and he should be thankful he's getting a mid-level tender (albeit through some wonky rules) instead of the lowest one which is the one a lot of people thought he'd be getting.

I think the Packers need to stop shuffling around their young players to much and stick with primary starters and backups at respective positions instead of shuffling starters around if an injury were to happen to one. That being said though, going out to the media and basically blaming the team for your poor play last year seems laughable at best. Especially considering you played the majority of snaps at LG anyways last year, the position you've primarily played in Green Bay since you were drafted.

O line fail

Colledge can whine all he wants. He lacks consistency, and he was given a HUGE leash to go along with the position movements, but he seems to be forgetting that aspect.

I have not. He has failed, imo

Ya know what... I have let this start to stew a bit inside me... and the excuse nonsense clause is about the only thing that really offends me in life.

I hear people using excuses to validate this or that.. or to cover up their own failings in life way more than I care to admit. It is bullshit... every f.... freaking time I hear it.

This happen or that happened.. I can't do this or I can't do that because of... some bullshit excuse they have.

I lost a leg, numbers of feet of intestines, broke 83 bones in my body, lived a life of pain from that day.. yet I have never used it as a crutch in my life.. you over come it and move on and succeed in your life regardless.

Then to listen to this type of excuse making from a professional athlete boggles my mind.. and why is he whining.. because somehow he feels dissed because he only got a second round tender. Still making over a million and guaranteed a job in this economic cesspool we currently are in.

You can kiss my ass... what a pile of garbage.

Shut your ass up.. use it as motivation to come back and prove them wrong... no instead you whine about it.. piss and moan and run from it... and you wonder why you get your ass handed to you on Sundays...

What a joke.

Let me ask you guys a question. Would Jennings be as good of a reciever is half the time he played TE?

You aren't going to be as good of a guitar player as you could be if you spend half your time practicing and playing drums.

He has a point however, it is what it is. DC, don't sign the tender then. Go FA next year and see how you do.

Well, switching him around between Guard and Tackle didn't do anything for his developement at Tackle because he can't play the position.

Secondly, had he had the talent to be versatile enough to do both and good enough at one to hold his own he wouldn't be sitting here talking about getting hurt by it and would definately be getting a big payday.

The guy has had plenty of time at Guard to play Guard. He has looked GREAT one day and TERRIBLE another. He's inconsistant and that's why he's sitting right where he should be.

I look at it as an opportunity to show more value and because he ultimately can't prove you can trust him anywhere it's now an excuse.

Today he is happy.

He is backstroking faster in the media than he does as a guard.

Link

Daryn Colledge 'Very happy' with Packers' offer
If Daryn Colledge isn't happy with the Green Bay Packers, he isn't letting on.

The fifth-year guard wrote on his Facebook page this afternoon he "has been tendered by the Packers for next season. And unlike popular belief and what is written in the papers, I am very happy with the Packers offer, and if I'm back this season, I look forward to another playoff run and a shot at the title."

It is believed Colledge received the second-round tender, although that has not been confirmed. He's expected to compete at left guard with fellow restricted free agent Jason Spitz, who is the early front-runner.

He did not respond to a text message this morning.

I think Daryn needs a Dakota kick in the nuts. Fuckin guy lets his man just walk in strip Rodgers of the ball for the game winning touchdown. End of season.

How many years have we been waiting for this momuluc to become a good player? Fuck him, and second rounder is too much. I'm not even voting in the poll this is so stupid.

Colledge denies he's mad at Packers

by Michael David Smith

Hours after a report surfaced that Packers guard/tackle Daryn Colledge was "furious" about being tendered by the team, another report said that Colledge is happy in Green Bay and not mad at the Packers at all.

WBAY in Green Bay is reporting that Colledge "vehemently denied" the report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and said it couldn't be further from the truth.

Colledge started all 16 games for the Packers in 2009, and according to WBAY, Colledge said that if he's upset about anything, it's that he didn't play well enough to earn a big free-agent contract.

Of course, it's possible that Colledge really is furious, but he realizes that he has little leverage as a restricted free agent and doesn't think he'll help his cause by taking his fury public. In any event, Colledge is almost certain to remain a Packer in 2010.

So he wants to leave, but he wanted a first-round tender. That's what I'm confused about. He has to be realistic. I highly doubt he believes someone will give up a first for him. If he wants to leave, he probably wishes he wasn't tendered at all.

It makes no sense.

Do players get paid more for a higher level tender? That's the only reason I can see him getting upset about a 1st rounder tender instead of a 2nd. Otherwise I think you're right, he's just pissed he got tendered at all.
