The only way Kampman stays a Packer is if 4-3 teams are scared off by the injury.

Otherwise, I think we Packer fans are engaging in wishful thinking.

Because I find it hard to imagine Ted Thompson paying 4-3 DE money to a 3-4 linebacker with questions.

You underestimate the man Aaron Kampman my friend.

Not at all. I think Kampman is going to get a big offer from someone other than GB. And I don't think Ted Thompson is going to be in the ballpark.

Now I might be underestimating what Ted is willing to pay because I think *he's* going to look at Kampman as having questions.

I think a lot of Packer fans are hoping that the "injury question" will keep Kampman's numbers down far enough for the Packers to be able to keep him. But I think they're dreaming. Kampman's going to get someone willing to pay top 4-3 DE bucks on a multiyear deal.

If the Packers only offer a one year deal, he'll be gone.
If the Packers only offer an incentives-laden deal, he'll be gone.
If the Packers expect any significant "home team discount," he'll be gone.
If the Packers don't offer him a deal that pays him top 4-3 DE bucks, he'll be gone.

Kampman's too smart to do otherwise.

From my observations .... I think some of us are overestimating the importance of the dollar to Kampman as opposed to the team and location he's playing in.

Green Bay is similar to his home town.
Packers are the richest team history wise.
He's a hard working man.

I could see the Packers signing him to a two year deal with the second year having one of those optional years or something like that. I think he'll get a nice base salary with some incentives.

People seem to forget that he had nearly 30 QB pressures before his injury and the next closest in line I believe had 9 or 11. He may not have had the sack totals, but he was a solid presence.

In my opinion ... sign his ass, unleash him on the QB every down except short yardage situations. Obviously, you can't be that consistent, but you get my point.

I agree. Like I said, if money wasn't a HUGE issue, AND the coaches would utilize him properly, he could really be an asset for our team. Unfortunately, the money probably will be an issue and he'll sack Aaron Rodger's at least once next year.

My big fear is he'd end up on the Vikings. Imagine facing that front four twice a year (actually, more like 3 times a year). We already have problems with it.

Besides, if I remember correctly, haven't they already courted him in the past?

It is most likely that we are talking about a very serious difference in money here, as in several million per year.

I would characterize a decision on his part to stay based on loyalty to the Pack in the "absolutely incredible" department.

It is far more on Kampy than the Pack. He is an acceptable OLB for us, with some pluses, but some minuses also...

He is a proven impact 4-3 DE, and the wage scale for those is a serious plane above 3-4 OLB's at his level of play at the position.

He is now effectively a free agent, just waiting for March 5th. We are in competition with all of those teams in need of 4-3 DE's, and if anyone running a 3-4 thinks as highly of him as we (apparently) do, we are in competition with those teams also.

He was not franchised at either level, so you have a large part of the answer right there.

+1 Expanded much further than I took it in another thread...

The money between "us" and "them" in this scenario is going to far outweigh the justification of paying it.

We rolled the dice by not trading him at the deadline last season.. then unfortunately he suffered an injury.. which solidified the options on the Packers part.. let him test the free agent waters.

I love the player, person, and teammate Aaron has been for the Packers... and if it wasn't more of a business that it is in reality.. I would love to keep him a Packer for life. But that isn't reality.. and we crossed a bridge of any leverage at the trade deadline last season.

And now.. we are doing the right thing by Kampman IMO.. letting him set his value on the open market.. and if that market is softer than I or we expect.. then maybe we have a shot at him returning next season.

Slim to none... and none is getting ready to board on the next plane out.

+1 right back at you, and I should have +1'd you the first time you reminded everyone about the gamble we took in not looking to trade him last year.

I understood the gamble.

If there was ever a scenario for an amicable parting of the ways, this is it.
