Obama's contribution to the current overspending orgy is actually quite minor. Bush has responsibility for the vast majority of it.

I agree....but you can't close your eyes to the facts. George W. Bush's spending was about one third of what Obama wants to spend.
The guy wants to go wild with OUR money.
Yes, i know all politicians do it, but this administration is out spending them all.
Let's see.......we are so deep in debt as a country, what should we do? I know!!! Spend even MORE that we don't have!!!

How is that supposed to help us?

How do you figure?
Seems to me it's just another "Have a problem? Let's just throw MORE money at it" approach.
Where's the "CHANGE" he promised?
Looks to me like exactly more of the same "you-know-what".

No. The differences aren't that dramatic. Obama's goal is to take the federal budget to approximately 25% of GDP. Bush's budgets brought it to roughly 23%-24%.

As for 4PackGirl's musings about whether or not it's possible to fix it, it certainly is possible. I'll outline my plan for fixing the federal deficit tonight (it'll be akin to yanking out teeth without anaesthetic), but right now I have to toddle off to class.

See.....that is what bugs me. The whole "CHANGE" line that i heard every day prior to the election.
It's been a year, and i have seen NO change. At least none that was positive.
As long as there is no having to answer for what they spend, it's NEVER going to change.
The government's ONLY answer to anything is to throw more money at it. And what does that accomplish? As long as no one is held accountable, NOTHING.
"I'll spend 3 gazzilion dollars to fix it" seems to be the answer every time. Makes the politicion LOOK like he's doing something, but in reality, he's just throwing away more of OUR money. And you wonder WHY taxes just keep going up and up?
As long as no one is HONESTLY overseeing how the money is being spent, the majority of it will be wasted by greedy S.O.B's that can get away with it.
It would take DRASTIC measures to "change" any of it. And our current "leader" doesn't have the nads to do it. Anymore then the previous guys did.
So much for "change". Like i have said, "change" is all you will have left in your pocket when these guys are through.

Coke/Pepsi.....Republican/Democrat....same shit, and too much of either will make you sick.

Bush spent....Obama has completely blown the lid off with his current budget. While Bush started the TARP/bailout spending, Obama has more than doubled it....with most of it currently unspent and to be used for re-election efforts in 2012. All that money will suddenly find a home in key states in the hopes of buying an election. Went from approx. $500 billion to $1.4 trillion under this dufus who cannot master second grade math with his Ivy League credentials.

And, for what it is worth, it is congress that is the real problem here.

Kiss you kids' and grandkids' futures good-bye. They will be nothing more than indentured servants to the state when this bunch of morons is done. Slaves without chains......

In Obama's defense, they did roll out a health care plan within 1 short year of being elected. It was bastardized as it went through the channels, fought over continuously, and would probably require a vast amount of tweaking if put into action (which won't happen because of the Brown election here in Massachusetts), but I think you need to point your finger in some other places too if you're pissed off that the change he promised hasn't happened yet in one year.

And some of it is just rhetoric too. Scott Brown promised to fight the machine. I am not holding my breath waiting for him to bring down the systemic bureaucratic bullshit though. The only way he could carry through with his promises at this point is with explosives.

The last election was a choice of the lesser of the two evils IMO.. with McCain you knew what you were going to get.. more of the Bush agenda.

With the Obama lead, there was a chance for change.. albeit probably very unrealistic..

As said above.. no matter which party you tear apart.. the warts look different but in the end it is still a blemish of mammoth proportions.

There is just too much government to effectively make rapid changes.. and it is getting worse by the year.

Until "we the people" decide that enough is enough.. and force change... it will not change.

There are reasons governments or nations rise and fall.. are we seeing our very own free fall now?

Time will tell.

My dream scenario: all foreign lenders stop lending the U.S. government cold turkey. It will be like giving a heroin addict a shot of methadone -- a violent reaction -- but at least it will give us a chance at a return to reality.

I think it is past that point.. if IMO, they would have let the banks fail, let the economy make the long hard adjustments that would have followed, I think overall as a nation we would have become stronger after the fact.

It would have been ugly, but IMO all the bail out did was prolong reality and burying us deeper in the stink hole.

And we have both sides of the political nonsense to blame for that stretching back years.

The recovery signs IMO are an illusion.. the majority of spending American in this country is upside down in debt and can't continue to borrow upon their future.

Those that have money are either soaking up all good future of preying on the failing or are at the age that they are using more money in Medicare than spending in the economy.

Sooner or later we as a country have to face that fact that we can't live on credit... and IMO, we haven't come close to learning that lesson. From the top on down.
