But there is a difference between the sensitivity I was mentioning and my own pet peeve. People are dinging on Finley for speaking of himself in the third person as though it's some sort of character flaw, a symptom of arrogance. I was expressing a personal linguistic preference. No matter how much that usage may get on my nerves, I never implied that people who use the generic "you" are somehow evincing a negative character trait, any more than does spastic use of the Valley-Girl "like."
In other words, the generic "you" may annoy me, but it doesn't offend me, as speaking about oneself in the third person seems to offend some.
