I think that this entire thread has started to go in to wrong direction. What does everybody think about how Finley reacted to all of the hype that the Packers have accumulated? I go back to my original point in saying that I think he doesn't really feel that we need to prove anything, but that he only said that because the rest of the team was saying the same thing. I HOPE that that is the way that he feels, I just get a feeling that it isn't. Thoughts?

But there is a difference between the sensitivity I was mentioning and my own pet peeve. People are dinging on Finley for speaking of himself in the third person as though it's some sort of character flaw, a symptom of arrogance. I was expressing a personal linguistic preference. No matter how much that usage may get on my nerves, I never implied that people who use the generic "you" are somehow evincing a negative character trait, any more than does spastic use of the Valley-Girl "like."

In other words, the generic "you" may annoy me, but it doesn't offend me, as speaking about oneself in the third person seems to offend some.

When I first learned how to talk, I always, ALWAYS refered to myself in the 3rd person. There was no 'swagger' or 'over confidence' or 'cockiness' when I talked. It just was the way I talked. Of course it sounded silly when I talked in 3rd person because I couldn't pronounce my first name, so it sounded like I was talking about someone else most of the time (especially to people other than my parents).
