Keep Chery.
Nobody else seems to want the return job.
Perhaps given enough reps he will develop into a bonafide return man.
It could be ugly for awhile but I hate to continue to risk Jordy Nelson back there and we can't afford to risk Tramon back there either.

I didnt see the last preseason game but get rid of him ... just because he took one punt back doesnt mean he will keep doing it.

Man seems like we have been trying all sorts of peeps and cant find a decent return guy.

we have what 1,000 TEs and FBs ... not sure how we will handle that with 5 WRs ... option is to dump a wr and keep another TE

Take a look at Jon Ryan. This punter (Now in Seattle) was let go because the Packers thought he may give up two many blocked punts based on his delivery and his number of steps to the punt.

Ryan is now a pro bowl punter with the Seahawks. The Seahawks were not concerned with what the Packers were concerned with, and it worked out for them and Jon.

Ryan was let go because he shanked too many punts and kicked too many touch backs. Also because the ST remember the glory days of Frost where he had good leg strength and touch on his punts and not what the current film showed of Frost.

Also Ryan asked permission to go see a punting expert, who some have claimed is the top punting expert out there (other say top 3... I have no clue but he sounds good). The ST coach (or someone in the Packers) said no to letting him go train a week with the expert. He was then cut at the end of training camp.

Guess what? ... after being cut he goes to see the punting expert... guess what... he rarely shanks the ball any more... how bout them apples?

I think what happen was the ST coach got upset or hurt that Ryan thought there might be someone better out there to teach him or he didn't want someone else messing with his project or both.

I miss Ryan as the punter... he had red hair, held well for Crosby and even once in a while ran the ball VERY well and juked/run over some guys out while doing it ...

O well time to move on... well can we? The old ST teams coach little helper is now running the ST show and seemingly not don't much better other than finding two decent punters.

Very interesting. I hadn't heard that about the punting expert. Our special teams coach had worked with Frost in the past, so I suspect he lobbied hard to get rid of Ryan and replace him with Frost. And I suspect that's a big reason why that special teams coach (I don't even remember his name) was fired at the end of the season.

Unfortunately, Ryan was cut just before he mastered the job of being an NFL punter. Bad timing.

Looking on the bright side, I've heard that Tim Masthay showed a lot of improvement during camp in his ability to kill the ball inside the 20 yard line. Maybe things are coming together for him as well.

Chery does not make the team. PS maybe. Since he has shown the potential to fumble from time to time, I would hate to have the gunners on the other team get all excited and tell each other that they want to get down field and try to pop Chery.

I see no way Chery makes the 53-man squad after his performance last night. He had no self-confidence whatsoever; he looked nervous most of the game and downright scared at times. He was utterly lacking in fluidity; he looked stiff and even clumsy. Plus he seems to have some fundamental flaws as a returner. For one thing, he wants to run before he has the ball, so he takes his eyes off the ball and is looking downfield before it's in his hands. For another, he takes forever to secure the ball and never does a very good job of it. On that one return he was over five yards upfield before he had the the ball tucked away; he literally ran with it held out in front of him for the first few yards. Had the gunner got there in time, he would have knocked it out of Chery's hands for sure. As it was, he still fumbled it when he went down. That was the other problem I saw with Chery: the ball popped loose almost every time he made contact. The Packers were just fortunate that he was ruled down by contact.

I think it's safe to plop him on the practice squad after last night's performance.

Chery is just one of several receivers on this club that "have shown something" but probably don't make this club.

Patrick Williams looks like a better receiving prospect.. tall and long. Something we don't have on the club currently.

Charles Dillion.. like Chery a bit undersized verses Packers, I know on the roster they show him at 6' 200 lbs.. but he doesn't look it.. lean kid.. but similar to the mold of Chery.. I don't remember him getting a shot to return..

Brett Swain.. I know, I know, some think he is the 5th receiver.. well while the kid looked really good last night in his spotlighted night.. you also seen why he might not make the club.. he seems perpetually banged up... if MM's Availability bit rings true.. one has to put him upon that bubble.

Chery didn't grab hold of his chance last night.. not that it is all his fault.. many of the regular special teamers weren't in the group last night.. but he didn't help himself either.

Point is.. I think it will be difficult to keep him based of a single return.. IMO.

Personally.. I think they fill this with a cutdown player with returner skills.. Swain can be cut and brought back if needed.. with his knee, I think it might be safe that we wouldn't be snapped up in a hurry.

To expect Chery to be amazing after he took his one and only punt return for a touchdown is a misguided foresight. McCarthy placed a lot of expectations and pressure on him by announcing he would be returning ALL punts. The guy is a bit green yet, and I definitely think he should stick around for a few more weeks. He isn't an immediate answer, but I believe he can be developed into a good returner.
