Macs have always been lauded as being more stable than PCs, but I've never experienced that myself. Now granted, I've never actually owned a Mac, so perhaps there's something about the way colleges configure Macs that makes them more unstable, but I've experienced more than my fair share of crashes and lockups with Macs too. I've also seen students trundling around their MacBooks having to restart them when they slow to a crawl or reboot them when they crash. I've had similar problems with Linux too. Just as with Windows, it seems like operating systems can only survive being hibernated or put to sleep a few times in a row before they must be hard rebooted. I wonder why that is.

The PC vs MAC debate is pointless I think. There are for more PC's to bitch about than MAC's in the world. How many people go 'omg my PC started up jus fine today and worked awesome!" compared to 'fucking slow piece of shit!'

No matter how fast a computer is, PC or MAC, its never fast enough. Just like how much money you make. It's a lot, but you can think you need more.

Philosophically, I like open source. As a consumer and techno-challenged person I like Apple.

But I think Apple is successful *despite* Jobs' control freak approach, not because of it.

If you want to consistently succeed at pricing your goods higher than most competitors, you need to consistently provide more options. Not less.

I love my tricked-out MacBook Pro with its solid state drive. But when I first switched to Apple (a Bondi Blue G3 tower and matching humonguous CRT monitor) it was because all of the things it didn't do that Microsoft based systems didn't -- random crashes, cool GUI, not having to be a computer person to use fancy features. Now...it sometimes seems like it is content to adopt the worst parts of the Microsoft business model between ever thinner veneers of cool design.

The G3 looked cool, and underneath was a major machine. The iPad looks cool, and underneath is a lot of nothing much.

In honesty, the success of Apple bothers me - you have quite rightly pointed out lack of features etc. - yet, for most consumers (probably the target market) they have a blind belief that Apple is the most feature packed piece of kit money can buy.

Even when presented with clear fact (play a youtube clip on an android phone), they vehemently stick by the Apple brand.
