Harris Could Miss Opener, But Make 53-Man Roster

Posted by Mike Vandermause August 29th, 2010, 3:38 pm

No one came out and directly said it, but reading between the lines, the best guess is cornerback Al Harris wont be ready for the regular season opener against Philadelphia, but might be ready to play sometime before Week 7.
I asked coach Mike McCarthy if he has ruled out Harris for the season opener.

He replied: I havent ruled him out to making our 53-man roster.

Harris has missed all of training camp after having reconstuctive knee surgery late last year. If the Packers place Harris on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, he wont be eligible to play until Week 7, which is Oct. 24 against Minnesota. McCarthy seemed to indicate he would like Harris on the roster to start the season. That way, even if Harris cant answer the bell vs. Philadelphia, he would be available sometime in the first six weeks.

Al is doing well, said McCarthy. Al is doing very well. He is hitting the targets that they are looking for with the medical staff. He has made a lot of progress.
Hes getting close.

Harris didnt shed much light on when he might be ready to play. When asked about his status, Harris said: Just waiting man, not going to step out there too early, not going to step out there too late, so just got to do what I gotta do for me to personally feel right and make the organization feel right. I wont step out there and ruin my reputation or I wont step out there to do anything detrimental to the team. Were just taking it day by day. See how it feels and listen to the knee.

When asked if it would be disappointing to start the season on the PUP list, Harris said: No. Honestly at this point in my career or what not I just want to be healthy and I want to be the same guy that left the field in Week 11. Thats all Im concerned about.

Harris suffered his knee injury on Nov. 22 against San Francisco at Lambeau Field.

He said theres always hope when asked about the possibility of playing in the season opener.

Through this whole process everybodys been extremely supportive and they pretty much told me to do what I need to do to get right, Harris said. At this point it wouldnt be fair to them or me to do anything else but that. Thats how Im taking it. When I feel good enough to play, then thats when you guys will see me.

My translation: Harris doesnt want to return too early, which likely means the season opener. And he doesnt want to return too late, which likely means Week 7. Thus, he should be back in either late September or early October.

It's pretty amazing he's back at all, that injury for a corner his age should have been a career ender. But Al Harris is a different breed.

With the tough cuts to make on the roster I'm sure the coaches will be tempted to stash him on the PUP and carry an extra guy they dont have to release onto the waiver wire.

But with our lack of depth at corner (Underwood is banged up, Lee is yet to make the jump and Shields is good but raw) I can see them wanting to use Harris before week 7.

Their decision on Harris may determine whether Bush gets cut or not.

I hope Harris is put on the 53-man roster and is ready to go before week 7. That said, I don't want him to be rushed back. Oh, and I don't mind Bush getting cut either as a result of including Harris on the roster.

I'm not super aware of where his knee is, but I almost wish he would go on the PUP list. I will feel much more confident in his body and his re injury risk at that point. Sure it will be lame to not have him until then, but it will be much better to have him for the next couple years, even as a nickle back.

What would be lame is him coming back too soon and ruining the last couple to few years of his career instead of sitting out a half dozen games and helping us win Super Bowl XLV.

I hope he doesn't end up on PUP, because I think he can't even practice until week 7 if that's the case, which means a return isn't likely until maybe week 9 or ten. Even if he isn't ready for the first few games, it's a bonus over having him sit out practice for 6 weeks.

He hasn't practiced this entire camp anyway. How much use is he really going to be the first few weeks, even if he's activated on gameday? Stash the man on the PUP and bring him back later in the season if it looks like the team is poised to make a playoff run.

I know I personally will be furious if they rush him back and he ends up on IR by midseason.

I don't want him to go on the PUP. That way he can't practice with the team even if he's healthy by week 3. Just let him have a roster spot and bring him in when he's healthy.

Can you clarify this just a little for me? Can he at least be at practice and meetings and such, but just not walkthroughs or live practices? If this is the case, he would still know the game plans and such as well as his own private conditioning. The mental aspect of his game should be sharp.

I would agree though that it would be best just to give him a roster spot and have him practice in a limited fashion until he is totally ready, even if that's week 10.
