So wrong, case and point - Schefter about the "Schism" which was clearly BS. As far as I can tell, Schefter is still one of the top 3 analysts on the biggest sports network on the planet after that BS story. His source was like Jackson or Sage, how can you print a story without confirming it with Peterson, Hutchinson, Williams, Allen ,etc.

Then Ed Werder last year too, he's still at ESPN.

In this day and age, you can say or do whatever you want because of "team officials within the organization". And no one can ever prove you were wrong because the team officials "want to remain anonymous because the news is not public yet".

I do agree with the reader who challenged the reporter to show his source. That still has not been forthcoming. If these texts were actually sent and received, why doesn't someone have the balls to admit they personally received one?

I'm definitely beginning to lean toward the theory that this was a practical joke (perhaps at Shiancoe's expense) gone entirely out of control.

This is my whole point. Longwell makes up a text message he received from Favre joking about a pizza buffet so Favre can appear as he did not send out text messages to teammates? Why lie about all this. What is the motivation. You would probably get public symphathy if the "true" story went public that he was done but his teammates convinced him to come back.

If the Vikings organization is this GOOD at keep such a MEANINGLESS story under wraps, we as Packers fans should be worried. These guys are basically like family then in terms of chemistry and cohesiveness. They are willing to pubically lie (the coach, the GM, the players, etc.) just so Favre can pretend he didn't send TEXT messages.

I don't think this guy came out and said this without some kind of fire being there. I will give reporters that much credit. But is it at all possible this thing just went out of control. Like why not report "Favre thinking of retiremetn" or whatever. No, the report was "Favre retired".

Like if all these guys received texts, why wouldn't they just come out and say "yeah there were some texts but he hasn't made a decision" if the organization as a whole has decided to lie. Why take such a big risk to say there were no texts and have Longwell make up a text exchange just so the public doesn't know Favre sent some texts. The easiest way out seems to have been just to tell a modified TRUTH. We got some texts but he isn't decided. Thats it, why have this massive conspiracy.

once it was evident his teammates and coaching staff really wanted him back, favre reconsidered coming back.

its really that simple...don't see why that is so hard to believe, and why some are so intent on smearing brett and make up how he lied about something

But just cuz a "source" is not named its a lie?

Look you dont believe Brett sent any texts, I think he did..

No one is saying its a lie because there is no source. I think the issue (and I cannot speak for everyone) is that the whole story was blown out of proportion based on shady reporting. ESPN and NFL Network basically launched a Favre Retirement Special, every columnist started trashing Favre, etc. All from soemthing that was not confirmed by Favre or the Vikings. Its careless, maybe its all true but we need more concrete sources in journalism. And with Favre involved, for whatever reason, journalistic pride gets thrown out.

I believe there must have been some fire there for this to get reported but for the media to go this crazy about a Tweet is nuts.

For all I know, Favre, Peterson, Longwell, Childress, etc. all lied to cover up these texts. But for all I know, they didn't. But without concrete proof, how can the media go this nuts? They need to take a step back and understand the consequences of their actions.

what did brett lie about??

why is the source listed as you when the story is on MSN??

maybe if some of the packer players and executives acted in the same manner as the vikes, brett may have never left.

The players and coach mentioned don't need to lie if they were not the ones who received the texts. Who said Longwell or Peterson or Childress received them? Maybe Rice and Harvin did and told others?

We can't dictate a gray area in one direction, but exclude it for others.

I do agree, the media went nuts and even two guys on ESPN radio said ESPN needs to stop going bonkers over any thing Brett. They were saying it was borderline pathetic how ESPN was giving so much coverage to Brett while ignoring other sports.

This is the bottom line idea.. by now everyone in the media should know that nothing is concrete when it comes to Brett.. so why go gaga over it.. and why do we buy into it as well.

Here were are on page 7, debating whether so and so or so and so lied or whatever.. why?

If he plays... he plays .... if he doesn't he doesn't... but that will not be answered until the season starts.. and even then it might change... after all this is Brett we are talking about.

I don't know if I have ever seen such a polarizing player in Packer history.. very few are middle of the road on their opinion of Brett.. and just like Brett or the media reaction to him.. I don't see it changing.. ever. It will mellow.. but I doubt it will ever disappear and all of Packer nation isn't split upon it.

My interest from a Packer standpoint is to someday hopefully get the truth of how the 08' offseason truly played out that started it all.. from a sociology standpoint of how people formed their opinions to it all.
