I think what will make the biggest difference in Clay's sack total is whether or not we have another pass rushing threat.

Awesome, lol.

I never actually respond to these articles, but I was bored out of my mind, so I wrote a bit.

Thanks for all the compliments, btw.

This is what I wrote over there, since it pretty much applies to this topic.

I doubt that Pickett gets more sacks. I think he'll still be eating blocks, mainly. If anyone should benefit there, it's Brad Jones.

Especially if Raji can do what they want him to do in the middle, create more of a push. Hopefully forcing the QB outside more than what they got with Pickett, running into our LBers.

I still think that Jenkins is our best pass rusher. He won't get the most sacks from his 3-4 DE position, but he does make quite a difference.

Clay Matthews, in my opinion, is somewhat overrated. I don't know if his production will go up from here. He shows great hustle, but I just don't see the pass rushing moves.

Like the article states, the Lions, Bears and Packers have been closing the gap, but they're still trailing the Vikings with Jared Allen, Kevin Williams and Pat Williams on that line (and Edwards getting a free ride with those three).

You don't think legit NFL pass rushers get doubled? Of course they do.. Clay has to add to his game, IMO, before he belongs in the pass rusher threat category.. and I have high hopes that he will.. just stating he needs to develop his game at this point.

I'll echo your point in the main: Jones isn't going to become this pass-rushing specialist, and if anyone thinks that than they are wishing for WAY too much.

Quite simply, the job of the LOLB in Capers system is to pass-rush just as much as it is to defend the run.

In other words, unless Jones significantly makes more of his pass-rushing opportunities, he should be in the neighbourhood of 8 sacks. That's a decent total. However, we desperately need someone from the D to step up, and that someone has to a player other than Jenkins (who posted career highs in pressures).

Enter the shuffled D-line.

I'm not that happy with having Jones penciled in as the starter and pretty much no one behind him, but it's obvious that our defensive staff doesn't think that that was our biggest problem last year.

I can see how they're thinking that this is a problem with the D-line. When you have finesse rushers on both sides, you want them to get to the QB by running around tackles. If you can't get a push from the NT or get your DEs to collapse the pocket, QBs can step up easily.

Pickett is a great space-eater. Raji can get more of a push. In nickel situations, Neal and Jenkins should be able to get to the QB by themselves, let alone with Jones and Matthews next to them.

BTW congrats Rock!

Although to be honest, I think the first three lines of your post are much more profound than the line used in the blog (that is to say, I don't think what was quoted was the most worthwhile statement(s) to read in your post). Still, congrats. 🙂

I also wonder if we plan to reduce the snaps of Jenkins a bit. Playing 80% of the snaps is a bit much from your main pass-rusher; you want him a bit less tired and focusing more-so on getting a push especially late in games.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I think that Justin Harrell would be a great body to have, if for nothing else than to allow Jenkins more snaps as a pass-rusher instead of being in on every early run down.

Either way, another emergent body like Pickett would pay huge dividends for our team, IMO.

A lot depends on Raji. Can he disrupt the middle or is he a blocker sponge?

In the past Jenkins replaced Pickett on passing downs and a speed rusher would be brought in. Hopefully Neal can replace Pickett on passing downs.

Eventually a small guy like Barnett who cannot shed offensive linemen will be replaced. Bishop is a bett blitzer than Barnett. Then problem is that if he enters the game the offense will know he is coming.

I still get upset when thinking about the Packers cutting an injured KGB to add Harrell off the PUP.

I just don't know if I agree with that. I imagine Matthews was our opponents number one focus as far as protecting the quarterback for the last 4-5 games minimum, yet he still had success. I don't believe teams were only putting say, 70% effort into game planning for him at the end of the season and this year it will be 95%. I think it has already been 95% and he was still was solid.

Also, all signs point to him, as well as others on our defense, improving, specifically Jones. Perhaps you could say there is enough film on Matthews to neutralize his game, and while I'm sure that's true to some extent, I don't believe its entirely true. He was a raw rookie and will only get better during the next few years.

Like I said, over rated by some, under rated by others.

Thanks for writing that! I think Matthews will tear it up again this year. He was a late bloomer in college, and he continued his very fast upward trajectory as an NFL rookie. Momentum is on his side.
