Would the measures today have stopped 9/11?

Well it would have prevented them from have weapons or possible weapons to use to over take the aircrafts.. or at least in theory if done properly.

Add to it the cockpit security measures.. I think with the two it would make it safer and higher probability that some of them would have been prevented.

Now throw in the some flights have a armed federal agents aboard.. now the odds become greater.

I think the cockpit should be locked down 100% during a flight and only accessible while the wheels are grounded.

I don't think it would have stopped 9/11 with our current check point system. Preventing passengers from entering the pilot cabin would have helped I think.

The check points I've been through I feel are not obtrusive. Sure taking your shoes off sucks, yanking out your laptops, but really the whole process once you get started takes less than a pair of minutes.

I have a hard time believing pre-9/11 airports didn't check for weapons before allowing members to board a plane. Or is that how it went down, they didn't have a security check in point?

they checked for weapons but you could still get away with small knives etc. what the terrorists used looked like pliers only they had blades too.

Sigh.

Okay. Some terrorist entrepreneur figures out how to separate the ingredients for a bomb inside however many 3 oz bottles fit inside a 3-1-1 bag. Boom! Disaster!

Now what are you willing to give up?

People have asked me "what's the solution that is better than what the TSA is doing?" I've hesitated because I believe, still, that the burden of proof lies with those who claim the infringement of freedom is "small" relative to the benefit.

But, okay, here's a better solution. It's real simple. Allow anyone who wants to to board armed with a knife. Or even a gun.

Flight 93 to me suggests where the real counter to terrorist attack by air will come...from the other passengers on whatever flight is involved.

It won't stop bombs that come via routes other than passenger carry-on, but then again neither do security checkpoints.

I'd trust my fellow _law-abiding_ _non-criminal_ Americans to protect me on the plane more than I am confident in fancy body scanners operated by government personnel.

Who would insure that those are law abiding, non criminal, americans?

Wait, isn't that what the TSA is?

now for the lighter side.... Patriotism, american style

What it boils down to is this: The burden of proof rests on you guys to demonstrate that any of these procedures have demonstrably made this country safer. You cannot do it. It's trivial to demonstrate that these procedures infringe upon the freedoms of citizens as defined by the Constitution of the United States.

I'd write more, but I'm about to catch a plane (haha) to Georgia, where I'll broil in the hot sun for a couple of weeks in the name of training.

Have fun among the peaches, Rourke.

Hope you remembered not to hassle the TSA folk, and hold up the line. :)

(Actually, despite my rants, I've always found the TSA folk at LSE pretty friendly.)

It can be. I had no desire to return to the States after spending time in Germany.

I was warmly welcomed in Germany. I was treated like a potential terrorist on my return to the United States -- frisked, searched, and interrogated. This despite carrying a U.S. passport and military ID card. It was at that point I lost my last lingering shreds of affection for my country.

I love my country from the depths of my heart. I have, however, no remaining respect for it.

but alas alot of times it doesnt not.

I do agree that spending time in another country has opened my eyes to some glaring problems with certain aspects in the states -

There is nothing wrong with America. Just stay away from both oceans and big cities near the Greaat Lakes.

ha - enjoyed your read RP ...

I grew up in kenosha; right between milwaukee and chicago - I almost always wanted to go out in milwaukee rather then chicago. Found the people in wisconsin more down to earth and friendlier.

funny thing is most americans I meet in london are a bit rude themselves (least IMO). Maybe its similar to what you said RP ... Ive spent most of my life living in medium sized cities in the midwest (kenosha, quad cities, rockford) that I became used to the type of people here and they all pretty much had a similar attitude.

and then you got chicago lol ...
