Interesting. I didn't see the article title as a topic when I searched through the threads in this section. I also notice that one is buried in another thread.

So I must say ... hmm irresponsible thread postage mate!

Edit, That thread doesn't even have his name on it, it's about DB's in general, geez. I'll fix it later tonight and merge the topics. I like what dfosterf did with the threat title, but then focuses on one player, not really effective for searching in my view. Damn kids!!!

Sounds like a gunner/kick returner. I like the idea of forcing fair catches too.

Well, IronMan, so much for Jordy's confidence.

That 4.3 speed is intriguing ... but can he make people miss and hold onto the ball?

Wow. I hope we can get Shields to hold on to the ball. I've always found that kind of speed intriguing. Probably wouldn't make it as a WR as being wide open and having a bomb go through his hands doesn't do us any good.

So maybe a CB.

The tackle looked sloppy but hitting the guy like that forced him back and he ended up getting tackled deep within his own territory by his teammates.

Shields may make our team by STs play alone, which I have no problem with as our STs sucked last year. I'm loving his speed. We could use someone with that kind of speed and hopefully he can learn to actually catch a football.

0 fumbles as a WR. I don't see why so many people are worried about him "holding onto the ball" because he wasn't a great receiver. I don't think catching ability has all that much to do with whether you will fumble it or not.

He appears to have almost no ball skills whatsoever, even for a CB.

If he makes the team I suspect it will be as a return man only. Considering he sees himself as more of a gunner then he's got quite a job on his hands.

At least we'll be able to tell if he's doing a good job.

How would you know if he appears to have or not have ball skills? You make it sound like he is just completely awful because some scout said he had a little trouble in his coverage. Yet in his first season as a CB he still managed to stay the starter for 10 games on a decent team. He was named the teams most improved player btw.

I don't think winning a gunner spot would be all that hard Jarrett Bush has led the ST in penalties 2 years in a row and was 7th in ST tackles last year. It's not like he has to beat out some great player to win the job. Not saying he will but Bush is overrated (if you can believe that) on ST.

Can he make people miss on returns?

Well, have you ever played against someone who was so disgustingly fast that they didn't have to make people miss?

His cuts seem more than adequate for his speed. Wish there were more than those 3 highlights I found on youtube though (it's the same ones over and over again). Hard to judge with that little data.

Bush isn't his competition it's Derrick Martin, our best special teams player who we resigned in the offseason is the gunner he will have to replace. Martin also plays a position (S) where we are thinner than CB which is Shields spot.

As for his ball skills I got that from the fact he failed as a WR due to his poor catching ability and when he started 9 games at CB he made no interceptions and broke up 2 passes.

Then there is this quote from a scout who has probably watched him more than me and I suspect you too.

"He might be that (special) teams guy you make a spot for," the AFC scout said. "He can run all day with wideouts, but his problem is finishing at the ball.

It seems he has clearly been brought in as a project return man. Martin and Bush (however much you dislike him) have proved to be above average gunners while we have a gaping hole at K/PR.

I hope he lights up training camp, I just don't expect him to do anything whatsoever on Defense.

Well, now he's got the chance to show what he can do, let's hope it's good. He's a rookie doing rookie orientation...give him a few minutes.
