When did the NFL stop using the painted jersey numbers? They now use stitched on numbers, but when did that start?

It was stitched back when they wore wool. I believe screen printed numbers probably went out of style in the mid 90's. Maybe earlier. Probably because of the lack of durability.

I'm curious to know when stopped painting the numbers on the jerseys though. It was after 1981 but before 1987. That's the best I can narrow it down, lol.

Hmm, Dan Marino had the painted or pressed on numbers his Rookie year. 1983.
