I always felt the REAL solution to our health care woes was to get everyone on an HSA plan. Forces people to think for themselves because they are essentially paying with their own money (with the help of an employer and the money being 100% tax-free).

"rabidgopher04" wrote:

The problem with HSAs is that they are investment accounts and if the stock market crashes there goes your ability to pay for and potentially receive medical treatment. Do you really want the money you've earmarked for your health to be subject to the twists and turns of the stock market? Ask me 4 years ago I would have said maybe. Right now, hell no.

"Formo" wrote:

Really? Because I had it 2 years ago, then got laid off. While unemployed, I had an accident where I needed stitches. Luckily I invested into the HSA program, because I'd be paying that out of pocket.

You wonder why our insurance companies gouge the shit out of us?? Because the health care/pharmaceutical industries gouge the shit out of the insurance companies. And guess what? We pay for it!

"rabidgopher04" wrote:

Actually, it is the insurance companies that negotiate lower rates with your doctors on your behalf. If you paid out of pocket each procedure would cost more than the rate your insurer pays. Read through your explanation of benefits after your next doctor's visit. There should be a charge for the visit and then an "allowed amount" less than the charge. That's the rate the insurer negotiated for you.

Why does insurance cost so much? It depends on the plan you have (deductible amount, family maximum, percentage of co-insurance). Get a higher deductible plan and you pay less in premiums.

For the record I am against this healthcare reform primarily because of the notion that the federal government is requiring me to make a commercial transaction simply because I am alive. This is no longer a free country, folks.

I don't know the numbers.. But I do know that you get a HUGE discount if you go into the ER and don't have insurance. That same discount I doubt the insurance companies get (unless they are in-market). For prescriptions, maybe.. But for the actual health care, I highly doubt the insurance companies pay less than or equal to what people that pay out of pocket pay. The insurance companies are the much bigger cash cows, why would the healthcare providers NOT go after them?

maybe your reality, but i prefer to believe that we have a responsibility to all of humanity, not just the ones who can afford it.

And what is social security other than cradle to grave handholding?

I agree that we -- as humans -- have an obligation to help each other. The government should not be in the compassion business.

Obviously, I'm opposed to Social Security, too.

Agreed, nonstop.

Yes, dingus...we SHOULD care for society's most vulnerable. Big difference between someone who is truly in need, and someone bilking the system. And if you are not reasonable enough to admit/accept that welfare, in all forms, is rife with abuse and waste, then there is really no common ground to be had.

And Nonstop...yes, compassion belongs in the hands of people, in as local and micro a way as possible, not the government.

There is fine line between compassion, and blind faith. More damage has been done to peoples' and societies in the name of compassion than as result of overt ill intent.

So then YOU go help the people who can't afford it. No one is stopping you. But don't slap a 2,000 article law on the rest of us who want to take care of our own family first.

And Social Security really worked out great, didn't it? Bankerupt.

Define govern, I think it has something to do with "influencing the behavior of" and "bring into conformity with rules or principles" or "exercise authority over". If you left it to the masses to decide, you really think there's a chance in hell they'd doing the right thing?

then by all means, refuse SS when it is your due and remain self sufficient until you cease to exist, just pray you don't get sick between now & then.

Look, I'm not saying that I'm comfortable or happy with the way this government has treated this issue or myriad others. What I am saying is that we as a people are responsible for the people we put in office, be it Executive, judicial or that other branch of government I can't think of right now! The basic premise behind health care reform IS immensely important and this recent bill is a tiny step in the right direction. VERY TINY! But shit needs to be changed and that can't be argued. Big Pharm and Big Insurance have put the citizens of this country behind the eight ball and much needs to change.

All i can say on this is Fuck it 2012 hopefully the world will end because we will not have any rights soon. Maybe they should think of spending a few hundred Million dollars and get rid of all the illegals in this country. That would boost our economy back up. Bring our troops home and line them up on the border and anyone trespasses shoot them on the spot. They want in this country take the test and pay fricken taxes like the rest of us. But no we can't do that they get paid to goto school free medical treatment and welfare. Hell i know one guy that rotates his relatives into his country because he gets 5000 a month to do it. If your a foreigner you cant get tons of free money but if your an American you have to jump thru loops to get help.

So in closing i say welcome to the Anarchy States of America.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)
