I would definitely like having him on my team. But I wouldn't give up a 1st for him. I think that we could talk the Chargers into a 2nd and a 5th or something of that nature.

If we got Shawne Merriman, we instantly get an elite pass rusher opposite of Clay Matthews. Do you guys remember watching him before he hurt his knee? He was the best OLB in the NFL...I think that he can get back to that level. Get him coached up some by Kevin Greene and we have two monsters at OLB.

Merriman would also bring a hell of a lot of energy to the team. I love his celebration when he gets a sack.

This is about the only semi-realistic FA possibility that interests me. Assuming he can come back from the injuries, this would likely be the year that comeback manifests. His "attitude problems" are barely worth mentioning, in comparison to the real problem dudes in the league, and w/ coach Greene pushing the buttons you have to think there's a good chance we could luck into a Woodson-esque situation @ OLB. That'd be mighty nice.

Merriman has played for shit ever since he got busted for being juiced.

Peppers is a headcase whose play has steadily declined over the past several years, and who wants entirely too much for his services.

Pass, and pass. Dudes are living off the past!

I will repeat my stance last season.. there is no way Peppers is a Packer next season.. skirt and pom pom's apply.

As to Merriman.. no thanks, not only does it appear the speed rushers best days are behind him.. it also appears that he has a little bit of an circus style off field life.. no thanks.

I have a split feeling on this.

1. If we go for Merriman, we give away Kampman. If that happens I will surely get over it as I think we should allow Kampman to play a position he is built for. Would be nice to see him retire with the Packers though.

2. Merriman has a past with trouble. Regardless of being over it or not, we all know his exceptional year was due to steroid use. You don't hear much about him now...without the steroids.

3. Merriman is an obvious upgrade over anything the Packers have at the moment. Kampman plays great football but is one dimensional. Jones showed he can play but I think they should give him time to develop and possible pack 10-15 pounds on. Merriman provides a decent rush and can cover.

It's not his job to make the fans happy. his job is to build a solid, winning football team and get us to the big game. If the fans like the moves he makes, great, if they don't, tough shit. I doubt thompson thinks of the fans reaction at all when considering his actions.

Any player who is either on the west coast or from a big city like New York or Dallas is probably going to have a nightlife that would make a regular Midwestern Packer fan uncomfortable. I don't think you take a guy and cross him off your list because of that. It would have to be Pac-Man like ridiculous and I don't think that's the case with Merrimen.

I also think his lack of production is more due to the fact he was coming off of a terrible injury in 2008 than it does him being busted for steroids. He was busted in 06. In 07, he had 12.5 sacks. In 08, he suffered a nearly career ending injury, but came back this year. Next year, he should be back to full playing strength. He's only 25 as well.

It makes a ton of sense, especially for a 2nd round pick.

Here is the problem with a Merriman type to me... it isn't clear cut that he will ever be the player he flashed as.. so risk number one.

Risk number two is he is going to want and probably demand big money... if he doesn't get it he probably becomes a negative influence.

So you either deal with the negative or pay him..

Pay him, it is going to be a premium money.. much like the risk of Peppers shifting position, you don't throw money at a high risk return if possible.. the only place you get trapped in that game is early in the draft currently.

And there is a reason that is being worked on.

If Merriman agreed to either a heavy incentive laden deal or a prove it year before paying him premium money.. so be it.. I would be more in favor of it..

But do you really think he will be realistic in his contract demands or not throw a fit if he doesn't get that up front?

I personally don't... which makes him too much of a risk to throw a premium pick and lots of cash at.

Furthermore... his impact year is four years removed.. granted one was lost to injury.

We have a developing Jones and Obiozor on the roster.. both that this staff raves about.

I would rather have our efforts go towards shoring up the safety and oline positions before we chase ghosts of the past... unless they come cheap.

Just my opinion.

I do not want Shawne on my team. He is NOT the player some mistake him to be.

Here's a perfect clip of who Shawne really is.
