It is true no third-party candidates have won in a while. But it has happened in the past. For all practical purposes, Abraham Lincoln won as a third-party candidate. Yes, the Whig Party was in its dotage (much as, I believe, the Republican Party currently is), but it was the victory of the Republican Party in only its second national election that drove the Whig Party to its ultimate demise. Many parties have existed in the history of the United States. Most are now dead. Parties grow old, they lose touch, they become obsolete. But they can hang on long past their natural lifespans if people keep artificially resuscitating them.
But what you're really saying is that in general, the American people are two stupid to look outside the "bread and circuses" that is the advertising-funded media coverage and critically examine other alternatives. This bothers me, because I wonder if you're right.
