I don't think we can talk about how much promise Breno has. Personally, I have a hard time not being reminded of Lurch from Addam's Family when I see him. But, how can we talk about whether he has any promise? We simply haven't seen him play. He was drafted as a project, as has been stated, and I don't think it was ever intended for him to see much/any action in the first couple of seasons. Now, I think he is going to fizzle out, but that is just my subjective opinion. It's OK for us to talk about him subjectively, but when one starts making objective statements about him that's where one loses traction, because none of us have seen enough of him to have formed anything close to an objective opinion.

And to answer this question:

I guess I'm a little ill-informed when it comes to the progression of really good offensive lineman. Are there other linemen who sit on the bench for a couple of years, and then really break out and become great blockers?

Of course there are, just like at every other position. Players like this on our roster include Cullen Jenkins, Nick Collins, Donald Driver, Johnny Jolly, Ryan Grant, and Al Harris. You could argue that some or all of these players aren't "great", but you see where I'm coming from. These players were not very good at the beginning of their NFL careers, and as of now, most of them are good, and a couple are great.

TJ Lang is the improvement to the OL next year that we are hoping for. Rarely do mid round tackles start first year and see success, usually that success appears in the years after the rookie season. If Lang takes over at any of the spots it will likely be an improvement over what we were starting at that position this season. I honestly think College is our weakest lineman, and with Spitz back he can be replaced by Wells.

Just to give you guys a little more insight to Mr. Giacomini, he is NOT an all-around offensive lineman. I actually like this guy because well, he did the same thing I did in college at the division 1 level.

Breno was a tight end his freshmen and sophomore year at Louisville. Junior and senior year, he was converted into an offensive lineman (tackle) because he gained so much weight. As someone who has done the same thing (at a different level) this can be considered a longer progress than most "natural" offensive lineman like T.J. Lang for example to come into the league and make an impact. He is a big boy and if he needs to work on anything it might be his pass protection.

Tengo, my comparison between Giacomini and Rodgers was not meant to be literal. It was meant to be an illustration. Not every single player who is on the roster of an NFL team plays every single down from the the day the are drafted until the day they really really really (I should put 4 "reallys" here.) retire.
Giacomini may be released this year. I don't know. All I was saying is that a 5th round long shot pick is not the same as a 1st round pick.
And you may not think so but there is a lot to be learned by linemen.
Their technique, footwork, blocking assignments take a while to hone. They use different methods when run blocking and pass blocking. Linemen who pull for a sweep or a screen do things differently than for a 7 step drop by the QB. If the man they are defending puts on a bull rush they react differently than if he tries to speed rush on the outside. Blitzes and stunts changes things as well.

I just want to take another step into this conversation and say that there is a TON to learn about being an offensive lineman. More than most would think. A strong brute can't just come in and play offensive line.
An offensive lineman (unlike a defensive lineman) needs brains with strength. :signduh: (inside joke between o and d lineman).
You have to be fundamentally sound to be an elite offensive lineman, knowing how to pass AND run block.
With Breno being a tackle, there is even more to learn about being an offensive lineman.

Outstanding quote.

I just read someone with considerable football knowledge shred LG Colledge for his performance this season, to the point of even suggesting the Packers not offer him anything outright.

When asked what Colledge had going for him, the same person said: brains. Calling him one of the brightest guys along the line, he said when dealing with stunts, blitzes, etc. you have to be able to think on your feet. Then he pointed to the someone like Barbre (physically gifted) as an example of what happens when you can't think at the position.

If he is in a "learning" process. And in fact, is a project. Why is he not just on the practice squad? If he still needs to learn, of what use is he on the team on the 54 man roster? Is there really not one void we can fill? I know it cant be changed mid-season. But we really thought we were sured up at all positions when deciding?

I'm in complete understanding that its not easy to play any position in the NFL. I am not in understanding so many of you coming to Breno's defense. Wtf has this guy done to earn your unquestioned belief that he can be a Tackle for the Green Bay Packers?

It's not defense of Breno; you stated he was the Justin Harrell of the O-line.

Harrell's futility comes from his propensity to get injured; he has yet to show he can stay healthy for any length of time.

Breno's futility comes from the fact that someone really likes him, and has kept him on the 53 man roster despite his inability to show anything.

You can't compare Breno with Justin. In some ways, Breno's presence on the squad is even more baffling than Justin's because Harrell has shown us in limited time he can do OK against the run.

Breno... hasn't shown us much at all. The only thing he has going for him is that he is very young, and learning the position still... this is only his 3rd year of being a Tackle.

However, potential is thrown around quite a bit in the NFL; you can only get by so long on "potential".... Breno needs to show something next year.

I want a free agent left tackle. That would include any scenario that has us taking a tackle with our first pick, keeping Chad Clifton, trying [insert favorite wishful thinking existing player here] at the position.

I'd keep Colledge if he isn't expensive. I don't like him on the line, but right now I'm wanting to keep everyone we can... I'd like Colledge as a back-up, so that tells you how much he excites me.

I am wanting to keep Tausch too, but he is almost as overrated around here as Lang, and I have to pray that Lang can take that job from him and improve his play, which is actually quite likely---RT-wise, not LT-wise...it's an opinion. Lang doesn't suck (neither does Tausch, but they are both far from great)

So, one FA LT and one 1st round tackle, that's what I want out of this offseason.

It all depends on what a couple of teams decide to do regarding tags and tenders with respect to a FA LT. Right now I'm thinking best one available, including (and probably) one that will not come without controversy regarding the pick-up. A premier LT in FA will not happen unless it's something totally bizarre, which is why I'm hanging on to Cliffy and drafting one early as well. I just want to go into next season with as many options as is possible, especially in light of the double-whammy of a shitty FA situation due to the poison pills, coupled with a crappy draft for tackles, imo. I worry about this o-line, a lot. Tired of it, too.

Consider bringing in another o-line coach.
