As it turns out, last night's failed effort by coach Brad Childress to bench quarterback Brett Favre wasn't the first attempt to yank Favre off the field.

Per separate reports from ESPN and the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Childress previously tried to pull Favre on two other occasions.

Per ESPN, the first one came on October 5 against the Packers, after Favre audibled to a long pass late in a game that the Vikings led by 10 points with 3:27 to play. We criticized the decision at the time, though it wasn't clear whether Childress called the deep pass at a time when the Vikes could have milked the clock, or whether Favre had changed the play at the line in order to further "stick it" to Green Bay G.M. Ted Thompson.

Chilldress reportedly was furious, but offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell persuaded Chilly to chill out.

When Favre learned of the near-benching, he confronted Childress, who blamed it on the emotion of the game.

Then, on November 15, Childress tried to do it again early in a 27-10 win over the Lions.

On the prior two occasions, Favre didn't say anything about it to he media. This time, however, he popped off -- and that apparently caused Chilly to blow a gasket, according to Tom Powers of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Powers believes that he was in the vicinity of the visiting coach's office last night when Childress learned about Favre's comments -- and that Childress emerged from the office "like a wild man" and "went ballistic."

Bottom line? It's a mess right now in Minnesota, and that's good news for ESPN, since the Monday Night Football slate ends next week with a suddenly spiced-up game between the Vikings and the Bears.

Favre making Childress blow a gasket makes me laugh. L.O.L.

I posted this over at PP.O.

You can make up all kinds of excuses, and I'm sure that a lot are quite valid, but Favre's play has been declining quite badly as of late. Taking him out with the beating he was taking and the average game he was playing would be the wise thing to do, if you ask me.

Like Kracker stated, Favre shouldn't be as insecure as to think that they'll just give the starting job to TJ. And I'm sure he isn't. I asume that it was just Favre who wanted to win the game. And that admirable, but when another player gives you a better chance to win the game, you go with him.

It was obvious that Favre wasn't the best option at that point.

If I where Chilly and Favre, I'd talk this one out and make sure to keep Favre's throwing attempts low and not let him get over 250 yards. Safe as much as that arm as you can. Much like they should've done in the beginning of the season.

Don't get me wrong, I love Favre, but for me, this once again shows that his ego has been horribly inflated. He's not the same guy who entered the league, anymore.

I don't believe Favre feared Jackson would take the starting job from him.

I do believe that Favre didn't want to see Jackson do something he was struggling to do on a routine basis, take the team and march down the field and score a time or two. If that were to happen, it would give a hint that Favre isn't as big of a cog in the Vikings as most think.

I think Favres to be credited solely for the wins and if he can't win, he doesn't want to see another QB march the team down the field while he's on the bench.

Interesting video here ...

I don't think you pull your starting QB in a one point game. That's just my belief and it wasn't like Favre was playing terrible. He had no time at all. If McCarthy tried that on Rodgers, Packer fans would have a fit and rightfully so. In my view, Chilly is at fault here.

Say it's a one point game against Chicago next week and he puts in Tarvaris Jackson because Favre complies. Jackson runs around and fumbles the ball and the Bears recover. They kick a field goal and take the lead.

Does Favre go back in now having to bring Minnesota back?

The Vikings haven't clinched anything yet except the division. They need that first round bye in my view. I think that will help a team like Minnesota who has some older players and couple of guys dinged up especially their receivers.

I'm surprised people are defending Childress as much as they are.

Why you gotta say that about the Packers? Don't bring that into this. Man, damn. We were doing so good on not doing the comparison crap.

That just ruined my enjoyment completely of this 'drama' in Vikings land. Now I have to go watch the four video's talking about how this is bad for a player to undermine the coach publicly. :)

I don't knock Favre for saying he wanted to stay in the game. I knock him for making it public and his choice of words. Why not just say "I run this shit, he doesn't"?

However, this is how I look at it.....

If McCarthy asked Chico to sit... He would have. The Packer fans would not have had a fit, simply because Aaron would not have made an issue out of it in a post game presser.

Aaron would have simply stated: "It was the best thing, because our coach made the decision. He thought I was getting killed out there, and I listen to my coach. He is doing what is best for the team, he has a goal for us as a team. It is the same goal that all of us have as a team."

That my friend is the difference between Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre.

The entire team played like shit. T-Jack wouldn't have done much, and lets not forget about the one point lead in the 3rd quarter.. You just don't pull your starting QB.. Whether he's playing piss poor or not (which Favre wasn't at that time.. He was no better than the rest of the team, but he wasn't playing horribly).

Bad move by Chilly.. But he has every right to be pissed at Favre for popping off at the media about this. Not the best time of year to have the media trying to create division in the locker room.

Favre is consistant. HE wants to run the show, and will throw tantrums whenever he doesn't get his way.
This story didn't surprise me one bit.

I don't disagree, but 10 years from now if Rodgers is still at that point, we'll see if he does anything different than Favre. It's not like a young Favre was never pulled before.
