I never said I think we'll be "fine". I think it could be a problem. However, I don't think there was a snowball's chance in hell that Mckenzie would sign with Green Bay right now. He "never left" New Orleans because he was out all season rehabbing knee surgery. He wasn't ready to play until now, regardless of whether he worked out for Seattle this summer.

I just don't think he would want to play for anyone other than New Orleans right now. As soon as New Orleans said, "we'll give you a job", I think any other possible destinations for him were no longer part of the equation. Yes, he would've maybe come to GB if NO was not a possibility, but once NO became a possibility, forget about it. And sure, we could've called him a few weeks ago, but Harris was still healthy, and we wouldn't need him. Remember it would've taken weeks to learn our defense. Remember, the report says we tried, but he didn't even show up for a workout. NO was where he wanted to be.

It's not a whiff because I don't feel that it was even a remote possibility that we could've lured McKenzie away from New Orleans. You say there are too many "ifs" with the what management could have done, but I think the biggest "if" was

If they had any opprotunity to replace a huge necessity for our D?

McKenzie didn't start his problems until after the '04 draft. Reggie McKenzie (sp) believed he would show up when the paychecks starting coming in. And we traded Vinson for Ahman Green I believe.

I think we drafted Carroll because Edwards and Thomas sucked. I thought Thomas was going to be a keeper for us. I was very wrong there.

pulled the below facts from packers.com.

Packers took Carroll in 1st rnd then traded down with Jacksonville and took Thomas in 3rd rnd.

2004 1 25 CB Ahmad Carroll, Arkansas
2004 2 55 (to Jacksonville Jaguars in draft-day trade)
65. 2004 3 70 CB Joey Thomas, Montana State
(from Jacksonville Jaguars in draft-day trade)

IMHO Both were thrown to the wolves their rookie year, Carrol still is floating around, Thomas, I never heard anymore about him after Packers cut him.

I am (almost) dead serious when I say that Ted Thompson should simply assemble a 1998 or 2003 reunion team for 2010. I think that is the only thing that would satisfy some of the members of this board. Such nostalgia we have. 😎

Come on! I don't have confidence in Jarrett Bush = we should assemble a reunion team?

I'm talking about the members for whom the default answer to every Packers problem is to bring in an ex-Packers free agent.

The draft is in April, training camp is in June/July. His problem started when he started missing camps.

We were drafting CB after CB to stop Randy Moss. We needed an answer and it was obvious Edwards was not it, lol. And we traded Vinson that off season too, I think?

If anyone is going to say the Packers whiffed on Mike McKenzie, then you have to equally say Thompson outfoxed Scott Pioli of the Kansas City Chiefs for Mark Tauscher who's been solid for us this year.

If i remember correctly didn't Mckenzie pretty much holdout so he would be traded? I haven't looked it up but i thought he wanted out of GB when he was here. So why would he want to come back now?

"Rockmolder" wrote:

Entirely different team? Different management? Didn't he hold out for financial reasons, alone?

Maybe he didn't want to come back to GB, I think we'll never know, but I can imagine that you'd prefer a starting spot on a 11-0 team better than a nickel spot on a 7-4 team.

Especially if you've played with that 11-0 for the last coule of years.

Drew Rosenhaus was his agent and we all know what Rosenhaus' philosophy is. Either pay me or trade me to someone who will pay me.

McKenzie went to an unbeaten team over a team with inconsistencies. Hardly blame him.

I have no problem saying that. But, management can do both good and bad things as said before in this thread by you and others.

I don't hate our management in anyway; I just think we need a better, more experienced DB in Green Bay.
