As it turns out, there were two suitors for the services of cornerback Mike McKenzie, one of the unlikely heroes of Monday night's game for the ages between the Saints and the Patriots.

Per a league source, the Packers were chasing McKenzie, too.

The need was obvious -- the Packers recently lost cornerback Al Harris for the year with a torn ACL.

In the end, McKenzie selected the Saints, in part because the Saints were willing to omit from his contract any language protecting the team against further salary obligation if a knee injury were to land McKenzie on injured reserve.

That said, it's unknown whether the Packers ever had an option to match the contract that the Saints gave to McKenzie. The 10-year veteran worked out for the Saints and signed there without visiting Green Bay.

McKenzie entered the league as part of a 1999 Packers draft class that obviously was aimed at dealing with Vikings receiver Randy Moss, who had made good on his promise to "rip up" the league as a rookie the prior season. In round one, Green Bay drafted cornerback Antuan Edwards. In round two, the Packers added cornerback Fred Vinson. McKenzie arrived in round three, and defensive back Chris Akins was picked in round seven.

Edwards, who was moved to safety, ultimately became a bust. McKenzie far and away emerged as the best of the bunch.

After watching him play Monday it looked to me that he still has a lot left. He picked off Brady and stopped numerous plays from getting first downs with tackles and pass deflections. This might be turn out to be the biggest whiff for us in replacing someone in a while.

He never left New Orleans. He would have been a nickel here and had a chance to start there.

Not management's fault on this one. It would have been great to get him here to keep Bush off the field.

yeah, how can you call this a management whiff? The guy was in a Tauscher-like situation. Does anybody really feel like he would rather play anywhere than New Orleans this year? Hell, I bet there are a number of guys in our locker room, and all the other 29 locker rooms around the league, who wish they were playing for New Orleans this year.

Would have been cool to see him back in Green Bay, but it's not, like, a secret how good New Orleans is this year. Not surprised he ended up there, but I am happy to know the Packers went for him at least.

This was definitely not a whiff. McKenzie didn't even take a chance on visiting Green Bay and as bozz said, who wouldn't want to play for the Saints right now?

Starting opportunity over a 60% playing time for Green Bay...11-0 vs. 7-4....dome atmosphere vs cold ass atmosphere (think knee injury and after affect).

McKenzie had a helluva game against New England.

Total Packers not impressed

Where the heck did all the grudge holders go?

Maybe the GBP fanbase burned through their collective quota or something.

I kind of got a kick out of the comments (in the link) also.

He did look good with the Saint's, but any self-respecting GBP thread simply must include the old dirt on him, imo.

I think his hold out was 46 days, he was supposedly coming back to the team, and then demanded a trade...Something like that...

=

asshole.

:thumbleft: For old time's sake, Mike... I'm in it for the long haul, you m$therf$cker :thumbleft:

I'd rather have Bush out there than him. That PROVES I cannot stand the s.o.b.

(Actually, if given the choice, I'd rather have a cardboard cut-out or a fathead  or something over either of 'em, lol)

Meh, whatever. It would have been nice to have him back but I don't blame him for choosing New Orleans.

I would rather have had McAlister if he would have been available.. he is more our style of physical corner.. although McKenzie isn't a push over.

Saints nabbed both of them.. the bastids anyway.

But I have faith in Woodson and Williams.. and I think we have enough after than to play adequately.. albeit another tested veteran would make m feel more comfortable.
